Port Juveniles still can't figure out Uxbridge cre by Paul Wylie On December 29, 1993, the Port Perry Juveniles participated in Uxbridge's home tournament. first game for the Key-Bar Juvies was against the host team. Before the end of the first period the score was 0-0 when John Ennis was awarded a 1 8 ty shot. Unfortunately, after the shot the score was still tied. Minutes .Ipter, with some forechecking by 'ylie and Vanderlight, Darrel" Vander Slagt put Port on the board. With just over a minute to* play, Port scored their second of the game - which would turn out to be all they needed. Fitzgerald made a quick pass to the circling Garvock who quickly turned a sent a beautiful cross- ice pass to Ryan Ridgway who moved in over the blue line and blew -- «shot past the unsus tender. In the second rg goal Uxbridge managed to break Willett's possible shutout, but the game finally ended in Port's favour: 2- 1. Port's next game was against Mariposa. Although the game was fairly lopsided in scoring, with Port winning 7-2, the game saw some interesting stick- handling by Port's goalie and also an excellent defensive game by Scott Heasman. After crushing one of Mariposa's defenders, Desaultels ¥ received 'a pass fromi Ennis. He then walked in to the top of the circle and blew it by the goalie for Port's first goal. Later in the first, Port worked the puck around as if on the power play before setting up Heasman at the point, who sent a bullet to the back of the net. Ridgway and Vander Slagt. got- the assists. Port's third goal was on the powerplay with Chad Garvock deflecting another shot from Heasman. Some forechecking by Port Wylie passing to Ridgway, who fed the slot. Before the goalie could react, Garvock had picked the top corner. Seconds later, Ryan returned the favour. He walked around , the defenceman and rather than take a clear shot on the short side, Ridgway threaded the pass to Garvock who was open at the side of the net. Chad made no mistake as he put Port ahead 5-0. Before the end of the second Vander Slagt notched his second of the day, with the assists going to Ennis and Card. Early into the third, Ridgway got Port's seventh goal, and his fourth point of the game, after one- timing a pass from Desaultels and Heasman. While Poet sat back for the rest of the game, Mike Tripp tried to get a little fancy with the puck. He bounced one off the post to a wide open opponent who graciously put it in the net - killing any hopes of a shutout. Mariposa's second and final goal seemed to be a harmless shot from the corner. Just the same, Port was going to the championship. Because of round-robin play, Port met Uxbridge in the final for a rematch. Perhaps Port was a little tired from already playing all day and the two week rest. Just the same, Uxbridge was in the same boat, but they had the desire and played well enough to win the trophy. Uxbridge jammed in their first goal with six minutes left in the first, and scored a harmless looking goal early in the Port started to mount a comeback late in the second when Ridgway scored Port's first by backhanding a yehgund in the net. / 'The assists went to Fitzgerald and Heasman. However, the third period was all Uxbridge's and they crushed Port's attempt to tie the game up when they scored again. The final was 3-1. The Key-Bar Juvies wish to thank Steven Stiles for helping out so far this season, as Steve is heading west in the new year to find some work. Port will miss his physical play and his rocket- of-a-shot. Port's next games will be down in Mooretown in a three day tournament. Good Luck! Lindsay The Auctioneers took to the ' jce.
