Heart Fund canvass sets | Hale $17,000 goal February is Heart Month and once again in Scugog Township, a door to door canvass will cover several areas of the Township. The Scugog Heart Fund committee has set a target this year of $17,000, said Gwen Taylor last week. She is co-chairman of this year's door to door canvass, along with Joyce Storry, Dorothy Bourgeois and Judy "Smith. Last year the month-long February canvass in Scugog raised $16,600, so organizers are hoping for an increase in 1994. Starting February 1, about 150 canvassers will be knocking on doors in Port Perry, Prince Albert, Seagrave, Scugog Island, Greenbank and Mand y As well, there will be coin boxes in many local businesses where people can make donations large or small. This year the Heart and Stroke Foundation is working with a new message "He's got a pacemaker. She's got a grandfather." A promotional photo shows a young girl of about six years of age walking hand in hand with her grandfather. Heart attacks, strokes and disease of the cardiovascular system are the number one killer in Canada. In 1991, more than 76,000 Canadians died of these causes, almost 40 per cent more than death by cancer. Heart disease and strokes accounted for 41 per cent of all female deaths in Canada. The Heart and Stroke Foundation says some of these deaths could have been prevented. "Women often ignore chest, stomach or jaw pain because they don't consider the possibility that what they are experiencing may be a warning sign of serious trouble." Because women are older when symptoms appear and often wait too long before seeking help, the rate at which women die following a heart attack is almost twice that of men. They also have higher death rates following heart surgery. Many of these deaths could be prevented if women would learn to listen to their bodies and seek help immediately, says the Foundation. Each year in Canada, over 50,000 men and women (most between the ages of 35 and 65) suffer a stroke. About 25 per cent will die, 16 per cent will need to be in an institution and 30 per cent will need some kind of assistance in their daily lives. The cost of caring for stroke victims is estimated at $3 billion annually. The Heart and Stroke Foundation notes that many strokes can be prevented if people takes steps to reduce the risk. New therapies are being developed this decade which should prevent many strokes; others will reduce the amount of brain damage caused when a stroke occurs. The Heart and Stroke foundation provides $18 million to support research at 200 projects on Ontario hospitals and universities. But this amount covers just 40 per cent of the dollars requested by qualified researchers. Watch for the Heart and Stroke canvass 'starting Fébruary 1 and try to be as generous as possible.
