MoJacks finish second overall in Jr. C loop The Port Perry MoJacks did what they had to do last Thursday evening against the visiting Lakefield Chiefs. They came up with a 7-5 victory te «clinch second. place in the Central Junior C final standings over the Uxbridge Bruins. It may not have been the prettiest two points thé MoJacks Jove put in the book this season, but coach Brad Menzies will take grabbed a loose puck in the slot and fired through a crowd with Dupuis down and out of the play to make it 4-2. The final marker in the five goal second period for the MoJacks came from the stick of Brad Moase from well out: The puck seemed to dip when it reached the goal and Moase had hi#*first of the campaign. Jason Cochrane tied the game at 8:34 as he cashed in a Clair Cornish rebound. Cornish has carried the puck deep into the Chief zone, un-leashed a hard shot and the rebound popped onto Cochrane's stick. . MoJacks went ahead for good » got one past Shawn Larocque late in the period to make it 5-3. In the third, MoJacks picked up where they left off as Cornish was set up by Jason Cochrane and Moase (his third point of the game) to give the team what looked like a commanding 6-3 But the Chiefs refused to roll over and go to sleep and they came back with a couple of their own by captain Al Medhurst and with 1:33 by Rutherford to make the game 6-5. They yanked Dupuis for an extra attacker only to have Keith Leslie take a pass from Cornish and knock the puck into the vacated cage for the clincher. Larocque made his second start in goal for the MoJacks after being involved in a serious car accident at Christmas. He J tested with some.very to shots, especially in the first period. There was a scary moment in the third period when Jason Cochrane slid into the boards and stayed down in considerable pain. He had to be helped to the dressing room favouring his right leg. It turned 'out to be a twisted knee and he should be ready for playoffs. SLAPSHOTS: The playoff structure is as follows: Bowmanville = will play Bobcaygeon, MoJacks will take on the Chiefs, while Uxbridge and Little Britain will battle it out. Wednesday in a 8-3 tie Jr. C playoffs The Port Perry MoJacks will meet the Lakefield in the opening round of the Central Junior C playoffs. Game one in this best of seven series will be in Port Perry this coming Saturday (Feb. 5) with the faceoff set for 8:00 PM. The series moves to Lakefield on Sunday night at 7:30 PM and game three is also in Lakefield Tuesday, Feb. 8 at 8:00 PM. Games four and five will be at the Scugog Arena on Wednesday, Feb. 9 at 7:30 PM and Friday, Feb. 11 at 8:30 PM. The MoJacks defeated the Chiefs 7-5 in the final game of the regular season last Thursday night in Port Perry. Going into the first round of the playoffs, MoJack head coach Brad Menzies said the team is healthy and ready to go, other than netminder Rick Hutchinson who is nursing a sore shoulder. Menzies said he expects 100 per cent from all players and he'll be pushing the team to play 60 minutes of hockey. in Little Britain there were several skirmishes. This no doubt will be a long, tough series betgreen the Bruins and the Merchants and the winner (survivor) may be battered and bruised for the second round. The MoJacks won four of the six games against the Chiefs this season, scoring 33 goals and giving up 27. Both wins by the Chiefs came early in the season by scores of 7-2 and 6-4. MoJacks won their four games by scores of 7-2, 5-8, 8-2 and 7-5. Two minutes later, Robert Gracie poked in the puck after being fed by Matt Phillips and Shane Norton. Before the period was over, Matt Blowe put Port ahead 3-0 assisted by Aaron Levy who by the way has done an exceptional job since being called up from the farm team to help out "Jamieson's Follies". Keep up the good work Aaron. The second period saw Port sew up game two with four more goals. Matt Phillips picked up his second goal of the night after Snortin Norton and Mikey Heasman set him up. Shortly thereafter, Matt Phillips returned the favour to the Nort and helped Shane score his first of three goals in this game: Brad Shanley picked up assist number two for the night on that goal. Matt Phillips then picked up a « hat trick by notethg his third making it 6-0 for Port, unassisted. With less than a minute left in the second period, the one guy who plays heads up hockey game after game, Todd Parry, left his mark on the Uxbridge goalie, assisted by Shane Ni orton. : The third period belonged to Shane Norton as he scored number two and number three to complete his hat trick for the night assisted by Matt Phillips. The final goal came when Captain Todd Parry and Matt Blowe moved the puck to Trevor Smith who made no mistake and - that made for a 10-0 game. Congratulations to "Leroy" Babcock for getting the shutout for Port. Port now leads this best of five game series. two games to none. Cornish wins title Clair Cornish of the Port Perry MoJacks has won the Central Ontario Junior C scoring championship. The Port Perry nativefyin hi "over-age" year with the green and white put together 27 goals and 33 assists for 60 paints in 26 games. Cornish finished the season several points ahead of the Eagles Brad Robinson and the Bruins Steve Brown. He had five points in his last two games to assure himself the scoring crown. $ He led the league in both goals and assists, and picked up 656 * penalty minutes along the way as well. Cornish is the first MoJack to * win the scoring crown since Mark Jobb several 12 years ago. Lornish is in his third season * with the MoJacks and has been ~a scoring threat all along.
