ModJacks-Merchants meet in round two It will be the Port Perry MoJacks against the Little Britain Merchants in a best of seven Junior C semi final series to determine who will meet Bowmanville for the League championship. The MoJacks put the Lakefield Chiefs out Friday night in five games and the Merchants did the same to the Uxbridge Bruins. Game one in the MoJack- Merchant series is this Wednesday night in Little Britain with faceoff at 8:00 PM. . MoJacks got a five point performance from forward Shannon Todd Friday night at the Scugog Arena as they had to scramble from behind to defeat the Chiefs 7-4 and take the series in five games. Chiefs opened an early 2-0 lead in the first before the MoJacks found their scoring touch and fired three markers in less than three minutes. Shannon Todd, Todd Dennis and Bill Mercer did the damage to give MoJacks a 3-2 lead. Chiefs were able to knot the game at 8-3 early in the second before MoJacks went ahead for good at 10:40. Smart did some nice work to control the puck inside the Chief blue line and he fed a pass to Todd, at the side of the net. FF Captain Clair Cornish ade it 6-3 early in the third with some strong second effort in front of the Chief net. But Don Rutherford of the Chiefs narrowed it to 5-4 at 12:20 when he beat Rick Hutchinson with a long slap shot. ModJacks were not about to let this game or the series get away from them however, as they struck for two on the power play in the late stages of the : game. Kevin McDonald shovelled the puck into the net at 14:49 and then Mercer got his second of the game at 18:42 tipping home a pass from Jeremy Ross. The ModJacks took a 3-1 lead in the series last Wednesday night at the Scugog Arena as they totally dominated the Chiefs for a 7-1 victory. This was the MoJacks best game in weeks as the offense was in top gear and the defense in front of Rick Hutchinson was extremely stingy in allowing the Chiefs just 23 shots on goal. MoJacks did most of the damage in the first period as they scored at will to take a 5-0 lead, including a hat trick by Shannon Todd. This was a clear indication he Smart. Just 26 seconds later, Gavin Cochrane fired one home from in close to make it 20. MoJacks were in complete control at 11:50 as Todd got his second of the game and a couple of minutes later Trevor Bremner.found the range to make it 4-0 and turn the game into a rout. Todd got his third of the period at 16:39 with a quick shot from the faceoff circle and the MoJacks were in the dressing room after 20 minutes with a huge 5-0 lead, and full marks for it, The second frame was just two minutes old when captain Clair, Cornish spun his magic. He came flying down the right side, pulled the puck around a Chief defender, cut in front of the net and waited until the very last instant before hitting the corner over a sprawled Don Dupuis in the Chief cage. Chiefs lone goal came late in the second when Mike Williams beat Hutchinson with a high shot from close range. Ian Titterton fired the final MoJack goal with 1:51 left in the second to make it 7-1 and there was no scoring in the third. Todd Dennis has been enjoying a great series against the Chiefs as he picked up three assists in this game to give him 11 points in four games to lead all MoJacks in the playoff scoring parade. Dennis is also playing it tough in a forechecking role. In game three February 8 in Lakefield, the MoJacks scampered to a 3-0 first period lead on goals by Todd, Steve Staniland and Cornish. But the Chiefs came back in the second with three of their own. Staniland got his second of the game in the third period, but the Chiefs got goals from Williams and Don Watson to come out of it with 4-3 victory to put the series 2-1 for Port Perry. SLAPSHOTS: Todd Dennis and Shannon Todd enjoyed a great series against Lakefield. Dennis fired five goals and eight assists while Todd had seven goals and six assists. Clair Cornish had 12 points in the five game series. Cornish was presented the Eleanor Gillam Memorial Trophy by Central League convenor Andy McLauchlan prior to Friday's game for winning the League scoring crown with 60 points. The last MoJack to win the title was Mark Jobb in the 1978-79 campaign. B ville Eagles finished is shaking off a long scoring slump as he looked like the Shannon Todd of old with a very deft touch around opposition net. Todd got things going at 6:34 of the first on set up from Gavin Cochrane and Todd off Bobcaygeon 17-2 to win the series in four straight. They played the final periods straight time. Eagles opted to take the second round bye, thus setting up the series between Port Perry and Little Britain. Eagles have a couple of exhibition games lined up with Conestoga College to help stay sharp. Merchants are coming off a very rough series with the Bruins and MoJack head coach Brad Menzies expects more of the same. "It's going to be a very tough series, a lot more physical than the last series (against Lakefield) he said after the series clincher Friday night. Menzies said he'll continue to play four lines until he has to Central Ontario Junior C convenor Andy Mc! juggle to kill penalties. He had high words of praise for the work of in Vivian, Todd "Smart and Trevor Bremnor who skated miles on Friday night. And Bill Mercer showed a deft scoring touch with a pair of goals. A late arrival this season, Mercer likes to play it rough and tumble. He'll see plenty of action against the Merchants. Clair Cornish, Steve Staniland and Todd Dennis were superb in a penalty killing role in Friday's game, presents Clair Comish with the Eleanor especially during one long stretch when MoJacks were short two men. With the up-coming Merchant-MoJack series expected to be a rough one, watch for specialty teams to be the difference, especially penalty killing.
