--_ 28 -- Citizen ~ 15, 1994 Malmont Atoms get playoff jump on Collingwood On February 13, Port Perry's Malmont Farms Atoms successfully started their playoff season on the road against Collingwood by. grabbing a 6-2 victory. This capped a busy weekend of hockey as they played against kham on February 11 and a tough 1-0 exhibition loss. On February 12 they scrimmaged with their friends on the Atom Pineridge Sports squad. The best way to take the home team fans out of the game when playing on the road is to get the first goal and our boys were prepared to do this after a fast- paced pregame warmup. Rookie Dean VanCamp must 'have asked his stick to help him have a big game as he opened the Port scoring on a wrist shot from the faceoff circle on a feed by sean Jeffrey and went on to notch two more markers for the "hat trick". Aggressive forechecking by our team allowed captain Jason Whitworth to poke in a rebound with assists by Steve Wygerde and Sean Jeffrey. Matt MacMaster was doing good digging for the puck along the boards and Grant Hooker was doing some good defensive work in plugging up the neutral zone to keep the momentum going our way. At 2:27 of the first Dean put us up 3-0 as he cut in from the wing and stuffed the puck under the sprawling Collingwood backstop. Centre Billy Carr and Sean Jeffrey earned the helper paints. Collingwood showed that they weren't going to just roll over as they got on the board to make it 3-1 with just 45 seconds left in the first period. The two teams traded goals in the second period as Dean scored while killing off a penalty as he was in the right place at the right time when Collingwood couldn't break out of their zone and lost possession of the puck in their own slot area. The home Blackhawks made the Port fans nervous as they put on a lot of pressure at the end of the second period and almost got to within one goal except for a great toe save by the Malmont "cagecop" Chris Monsma who made a fabulous toe save on a shot labelled for the low stick corner just before the buzzer. Forwards Scott Brownson and Dane Gray were busy bumping people off the puck and trying to be the first person to reach a loose puck. Veteran Dave Justynski and partner Matt Cracknell did some great blue line work in blocking Collingwi clearout efforts in the offenfiive zone. ' The th¥¥d period was all Port Perry on the scoreboard as the team realized that in playoff hockey you have to play to win every shift, Steve Wygerde scored our fifth on a pass from Jason Whitworth from behind the net and Sean Jeffrey notched his fourth assist of the game! Way to go Sean! The much improved passing - efforts by all the forwards was also rewarded when veteran Chris Skerratt parked himself in the goal crease and converted a perfect pass from big right-winger Adam Moynes. Defensively, Joel Tompson was a force to be reckoned with in showing some nifty stick handling.and partner Tim Jones made a nice spin-move to evade a forechecker and then make a crisp outlet pass to his winger. As always, "Bart" was there to stonewall any chances the Collingwood boys were able to muster. 5 y Nice win guys! Keep up that hustle, passing and unselfish play and you'll keep momentum going your way. Some fine shot making in Blackstock Mens Curling There were some excellent games this week in Blackstock Men's Curling even though the scores may not reflect this. On Sheet One Dale Van Camp was busy racking up nine points in taking six of the ends. John McNamara was struggling a bit and could not get by Dale's guards to count. The score was 9-2 for Dale. Sheet Two was a bit of a different story with Richard Van Camp splitting the ends but losing 9-6 to Keith Van Camp. It was an exciting game tied after four ends. Richard stole one in the fifth to take the lead but blinked in the sixth and left Keith with a four ender. Richard scored one in the seventh but Keith hung on for the win. Sheet Three had Merlin Suggitt, last year's men's champion, showing his style of 'old in'beating Cam Porter 10-3. Cam could only shake his head in disappointment and mutter, + "When Sug's on, He's on - and Auctioneers back in playoffs with 3-2 win The Pearce Auction Novice 'A' team got back into their Lakeshore Division playoff round with a hard fought 3-2 decision over Stouffville Friday night at Scugog arena. Having lost the opening game after a well played 3-1 loss to Lindsay, the Auctioneers needed this win to remain in contention. Stouffville started things off with a goal mid way through the first period. After several close calls and spectacular saves by the Stouffville goalie, Justin Moffat evened the score with an unassisted goal just before the second period Scugog Bridge February 9 - Afternoon 8 Table Howell, Avg. 25 - Doris Phinney and Judy Atkinson tied with Marie Carnegie and Joan McNab - 28. 2nd - Joyce Heard and Helen Matheison - 25. 3rd - Jean and Bob Coleman -A. The Pearce boys then turned up the offence, and with less than two minutes left, Jeff Tarbotten threaded one behind the Stouffville netminder to notch the victory. Assists went to Spencer Churchill and Trevor Lance. The outstanding defensive play of Garret Brown, jeff Simpson, Dylan Harper, Steve MacLennan combined with solid goaltending of Thomas Lee made ths diffurgnse by shutting down a potent Stouffville offense. when He's not, you still only have half a chance."
