But Mr. Mills and his NDP coll at Q Park are | EE a Ken Irvine of the Port Perry XL Gas Bar and Variety says taxes to keep them in line with extremely upset with the federal dtd Ontario will have to maich tobacco tax decreases similar to those in Quebec. With Ken are clerks Candace Ayotte, and Vanessa Mumford. Durham MPP Gord Mills told the Citizen the province will have to follow Quebec, but he's furious about it. See story below. Fields of Dreams registrations now coming in Registrations are starting to come in for what will be the largest slo pitch tournament ever in 8cugog Township this summer. "The Fields of Dreams" tournament on the July 1 weekend is expected to bring 96 mens, ladies and co-ed teams to the Township. Tournament registrar Doug Dempsey said last week the first registrations have started to come in and he expects a very positive response to an ad placed in the current edition of "Touching Base," a magazine about slo pitch. In fact, Mr. Dempsey told the Citizen last week that with a "rzen diamonds available in the ~ship, the Fields of Dreams cc handle as many as 132 ~e have a lot of positive interest in this," he said, adding that if team managers are interested in registering, they should do it as soon as possible. The event is sponsored by the Scugog Mens Slo Pitch League and all net proceeds will be put towards lighting at the three new diamonds north of the Scugog Arena. Mr. Dempsey said both Slo Pitch Ontario and Labatt's have indicated they will become involved as sponsors, though the details have not been finalized. Entry fee per team is $300. "We (Ontario) are being blackmailed by Ottawa. That's all it is," Mr. Mills told the Citizen in an interview Friday. Last week, government dropped the tax on cigarettes by $5 per carton and Quebec dropped its taxes by another $11 bringing the retail price of a carton to about $24. By contrast, a carton of cigarettes in Ontario is retailing for about $37, even with the reduction in federal taxes. Mr. Mills is outraged over these tax reductions which he called a "subsidy to smokers at the expense of health care." He said already tobacco retailers in eastern Ontario are putting pressure on Queens Park thé federal. to lower the tax as smokers flood across thedorder to buy their smokes in'Quebec. Here in Port Perry, one retailer with a high volume in cigarettes agreed that the provincial government must lower the taxes to match Quebec. Ken Irvine, who operates Port Perry XL on Union Ave., said this part of Ontario is close enough to the Quebec border that cigarettes from that province will start showing up here. He noted the $2.5 million worth of US cigarettes seized by police in Toronto on Friday night as proof there is a demand for lower priced tobacco. Mr. Irvine said in the past 18 months or so he has noticed a drop in cigarette sales and suspects smokers were buying under the table. But last week, he said, when M&D MEATS the federal tax came off, sales started to increase slightly. "Customers here want to pay the same price as they could in Quebec," said Mr. Irvine. Mr. Mills told the Citizen the Ontario government likely will announce reduced taxes within the next four weeks. Lowering the tobacco tax to Quebec levels will cost the Ontario treasury $500 million a year in lost revenues, he said. And the Durham East MPP wazned that it will just be a matter of time before liquor companies demand similar tax ' reductions to combat smuggling as well. "What next? Will they want us (the government) to drop the taxes on gasoline?" he wondered. "This was a terrible decision by Ottawa, just terrible," he stated. Freshness, Savings, ALWAYS!
