On February 19, our Atm A's hosted teams from Whitby, Newmarket, Stroud, Keswick, Scarborough, Port Hope and Lindsay in our annual Malmont Tournament. It was a happy ending when Mr. Neil Malcolm of Malmont Farms (who has sponsored this team for several decades) was able to hand out the Championship trophies to our own group of young men. The route to the Championship started off with a thrilling 4-3 double overtime win over Dean Van Camp scored the winner form Jason Whitworth and Sean Jeffrey with each team playing three men out to start the day off right. Jason had earlier notched two first period goals with assists by Steven Wygerde, Billy Carr.and Adam M oynes. Our other goal was by Scott Brownson ftom Joel Thompson. Chris Monsma ("Bart") fade several fine stops to repel many attacks by the Whitby squad including an overtime penalty shot. Game two for our team was a 5-2 win over a tough team from Keswick who had earlier defeated Scarborough. . Near the end of the game Port was clutching onto a 3-2 lead but empty net goals by Jason Whitworth (u isted) and assisted by Adam Moynes and hustling defenceman' Matt Cracknell. Grant Hooker and David Justynski were rock steady" throughout the contest "in . controlling their corners and the 'areas in front of Chris Monsma. We were lucky to have Pat Derrane on the bengh to bdck up Bart in case of injury, .° The stage was ot for our" Malmopts (who were enjoying the coziness of the MoJack's dressing room for the day) to face off against Stroud in the Championship game. Stroud had already bumped off Lindsay and Newmarket to reach the final. In period one "birthday boy" Matt MacMaster got his team on the board with assists by Scott Brownson and Billy Carr. Stroud won the second period and took control of the game with two s. With an exchange of goals (Chris Skerratt from Adam Moynes and Jason Whitworth) early in the third period the situation was looking grim for local fans and for our heroes with Port behind 3-2. And then it happened . . .Coach 'Teresa Hutchinson called Chris Monsma to the bench and went with six attackers. Numerous home team fans almost hit the roof when Billy Carr poked in the tying goal (assisted by Grant Hooker and Billy Carr (from Chris Skerratt and Matt MacMaster) iced the victory. Earlier markers for Port were by Dane Gray from Scott Brownson and Chris Skerratt, Dean Van Camp also from Chris Skerratt and Jason Whitworth Jason Whitworth) with just 1.1 seconds left on the clock. Destiny had intervened and in overtime Matt MacMaster outmuscled a Stroud player for the puck in the neutral zone and scored the tournament winner on a breakaway wrist shot! Way wo plig team! The team's determination in this come from behind win was great to see and everybody on the team and coaching staff can be proud of their effort and contribution over the three games. v Special mention is made of strong backchecking work by Chris Skerratt and Adam - 2 . defence of Tim Jones, Joel Thompson, Scott Jeffrey, Grant Hooker, David Justynski and Matt Cracknell alsé worked very hard throughout the dy and did a fine; job of "taking care of business" in their own territory. We hope that Dean Van Camp will be back in the line up with his teammates soon after sustaining a second game injury in a goal post collision. On February 18, our Malmont Atoms had ~ started their weekend successfully with a 4-1 win over Collingwood to take a 2-0 lead in their playoff quarter final series. The team is now on a roll with five successive victories and the secret to their success seems top be d efforts at i passing, "in-your-face" forechecking, and never-give-up backchecking. Our goal-tending and defence are strong-and all of our players seem determined to give their "A" effort in representing their town well! Next action for the Malmont Atom A's will be at home on February 25 at 8:00 p.m. against Collingwood in game three of their quarter final playoff action. See you there!
