Bill Van Camp had two assists while Edwards, Bart Wagar and Tony Oxley coun Game Three saw an excellent game between the Pineridge Phantoms and the Van World Sharkg end in a 2-0 Phantom victory. This was playoff hockey at its best with excitement at both ends of the rink. The Phant had Rick Three days after the hockey season's most celebrated scrap, Marty McSorley.stood pinned to a wall in the Pittsburgh Penguins d room looking far more uncomfortable than he did in the fight with Detroit's Bob Probert. Imagine that, a man mountain seldom corralled on the ice, comered in the dressing room by a team of aggressors half his size. Marty was gooned by reporters The scene was made even more curious by the players quietly changing in the background. Kevin Stevens, Rick Tocchet and all-stars Larry Murphy and Jaromir Jagr went almost unnoticed as the cameras focused on a man with three goals who had just been in a heavyweight punchup. At first McSorley tried to slide away and avoid the questions, but in his usual accommodating fashion he relented and begari thoughtfully sorting through queries about his battle with Probert and fighting in hockey. But it wasn't Evander Holyfield detailing a victory. McSorley doesn't glorify fighting by bragging about his_| wess. He refused to 90 into detail about the marathon.event and intelligently def ions like "Who do you think won it?" 'and "Did you guys really congratulate each other at the end of the scrap?" He said he didn't want to engage in the endless fighting-in-hockey debate because in his words, "Just like boxing, some people like it, others don't and there's no middle-ground." He did, however, point out that a chippy Penguins-Red Wing game settled into a beauty after the fight (eight minor penalties, no stick infractions, in a 6-3 Pittsburgh win), X . Despite his age of 300 mi in p in the last half- dozen seasons, Marty McSorley is no thug. He can play, as evidenced by his presence on the Pittsburgh power play. He's also a leader, as the L.A. Kings found out when they let him get away, then fell into disarray. There was a time, though, when Marty might not have been McSorley missed. When he joined the Penguins for the first time in 1983 he seemed all brawn but Edmonton's Glen Sather saw more than that and traded for him. "| didn't have to fight to stay in Edmonton. Glen Sather knew | could do that," said the 30-year- old from Cayuga, Ontario. "In Edmonton, | had to prove | could play-and T was fortunate to practise with the best players in the world. It was a great situation," McSorley rked hard to b a player and helped the Oilers win two Stanley Cups. He moved to L.A. in the great Gretzky deal and became prominent on a team 'with fewer stars. The Kings let away this season because they didn't want to. pay. The Penguins snapped him up and just recently he's started to feel at home. A tremendously conditioned athlete, McSorley is still pushing to be a better player. He says he won't waich fight tapes because he's always preparing to play, not scrap. He's an abolitionist - not of fighting, but of the centre line to open the game up for the most skilled. As for fighting, he could probably survive in the league without it but since it's allowed, he's a willing combatant if its important to his team. And apparently it is; the Penguins pay Marty almost $2 million a year. You could argue that's money worth fighting over. i I < "Jim Hughson' is sponsored by YAMAHA nA The Power To Sati fuvy (4106) 086-4437 "Legend" S8heehey score unassisted towards the end of the second period and then "Chief" Cowie from John Harman into the empty net with just one second left in the game.
