=~ 16 -- Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, March 15, 1994 => Ve at the lics The Oscars, '94 Predicting this year's Oscars is much easier than one might expect, but one has to recognize that this year the Academy developed a conscience and actually nominated the films and performances that deserved it. Unlike previous years, when sentiment has often been enough for a nomination, 1993 may go down in movie history as the year the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences remembered why they were founded in 1927. The Academy claims to honour excellence in film as an art form and technical aspects, yet over the history of the Academy far too many awards have been given for inexplicable reasons. How else can one explain how Citizen Kane (1941) lost best picture, or that An American in Paris (1951) won best picture over A Streetcar Named Desire (1951) Even performance winners such as George Burns in The Sunshine Boys (1975), or Marlee Matlin in Children of a Lesser God (1986) have left audiences and critics shaking their heads. Why? Consider that Burns won for playing an old vaudevillian, and Matlin (who is really deaf) won for playing a deaf woman, both fine performances, but hardly a stretch of acting muscles. As recently as last year, when Scent of a Woman was nominated for best film (?7?!!) and Al Pacino won best actor for his performance in that film, sentiment has played a huge role in the Oscars. Pacino won last year because he had not won before, and in no way was his performance superior to Denzel Washington in Malcolm X. You see it is much safer to honour a film about Olympic runners than it is to award the Oscar to a film about American communists covering the Bolshevik revolution. , that is precisely what nominees, fine films all, are The Piano, The Fugitive, The Remains of the Day, and In the Name of the Father. Best Actor: Tom Hanks will win for his wrenching performance as an AIDS victim in Philadelphia which is wonderful because' performance is the best of those inated. If there is a surprise H happened when Chariots of Fire defeated Reds in 1981, just as Gandhi was a politically correct film to honour, or Driving Miss Daisy. Time, the greatest test for any film, has not been kind to Chariots of Fire or Gandhi, they now appear to be old- fashioned films that were honoured more for their message than for their art. This year all of that seems to have been set aside as the Academy is out to redeem themselves, honoring the films which are most deserving. It may be a precedent, how many awards actually go to the deserving?? Not just the Oscar, but countless other awards are known for their politics, which I find simply despicable. Here's a preview to who should and who will win the Oscars this year, with a couple of mentions to those not nominated. Best Picture: There is no question that Schindler's List will win best picture, which is just, it is not only the best film of 1993, but one of the greatest movies ever made. Courageous, heartbreaking, and altogether shattering, Steven Speilberg has created a film for the ages. Already the winner of the best film award from the Golden Globe Association, the Los Angeles Film Critics Circle, the National Society of Film Critics, the National Board of review, and the New York Film Critics, Schindler's List is a cinch for the top prize. The other upset winner it could be the beloved Anthony Hopkins as the repressed butler in The Remains of the Day, but I think the Academy will honour Hanks. The year's best performance by an actor was not nominated - Jeff Bridges in Fearless. Best Actress: Holly Hunter will grab best actress for her electrifying performance as a deaf mute in The Piano, one of the greatest performances I have ever had the pleasure to see. Hunter, usually a jittery, talkative actress gives a performance that recalls Lillian Gish in the great silent films. How good is she? It is the finest performance I have seen an actress give since Meryl Streep in Sophie's Choice, which is the greatest performance I have seen an actress give. There will be no surprise in this category, the Oscar will go to Hunter. Best Director: After being snubbed for The Color Purple (1985) and Empire of the Sun (1987), Steven Speilberg is in the running for his first best director award. If he is denied the award, Hollywood may fall into the sea. After years of being pegged a whiz kid, capable only of audience pleasing films, Speilberg went to Auschwitz and created one of the greatest films of all time, Schindler's List. So, he will win, he should win, this is his year. If for any reason there could be an upset, look for New Zealand director Jane Campion for The Piano, but I seriously doubt it. Best Supporting Actor: A tough call, but I think Ralph Fiennes will win for his terrifying portrait of a Nazi in Schindler's List. There will be close competition from Tommy Lee Jones in The Fugitive, and Leonardo De Caprio in What's Eating Gilbert Grape? but I think Fiennes will win. Best Supporting Actress: Another tough call, but I have a hunch Winona Ryder may win for The Age of Innocence, director Martin Scorsese's film that was virtually ignored. Ryder gives a fine performance, is well-liked and it is her time. Upset winner could be Anna Paquin in The Piano, or Rosie Perez in Fearless, but I would bet on Ryder. And therest . . . The bulk of the craft awards will go to Schindler's List, art direction, cinematography, editing, etc., but look for Jurassic Park to win two or three awards. It is a shoo-in for visual effects, or sound. Director Jane Campion will win for her script for The Piano, and Schindler's List will likely walk off with the adapted screenplay award. In all, Schindler's List should take about seven awards.
