pd Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, March 15, 1994 --33 «a CITIZEN SPORTS Key Bar Juveniles up two games to none The Key Bar Office Equipment Juveniles have grabbed a two games to none lead in their best of five all-Ontario semi final series with Parry Sound. Key Bar needed overtime for a 4-3 victory on home ice Saturday afternoon and the next day in the Sound, goaltender Matt Willetts came up with some big stops to help Port Perry to a 3-1 victory. Game three is slated for this Friday evening in Parry Sound at 9:00 PM and game four (if needed) will be Saturday in Port Perry at 9:00 PM. Should the 'Sound extend the series to a fifth game, it will be Sunday, March 20 in Parry Sound at 8:00 PM. In Sunday's game, Parry Sound took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a goal by Scott Holmes. . The Key Bar was held off the scoresheet during the middle frame, but tm the third it was goalie Willetts who sparked the comeback. He stopped a couple of breakaways early in the frame and less than a minute later, Darrell Vanderligt was set up by Jason Philips to get Port on the board. , Four minutes later, Sean McEnaney got what proved to be the winner with help from Jeff Card. And with just' over Hawks hold the Just as the weather changes from week to week, so goes playoff action in the SHL. With Round Two starting on Sunday, all teams entered the points race to the final "Playoff Seedings". Game One saw the action get off to a bit of a surprise as the J & D Hawks, minus star players Bill Bridge and Wayne Norton, handed the Taylor Aces a 4-3 defeat. The Aces fresh from the "Fuel Wars" victory last week, were all set to feast on the Hawks, but the J & D squad put together a strong team effort to silence the Aces! Paul VanCamp led the Hawk attack with two goals while Sponsor Joe Curran and Doug Suppelsa potted singles. Hawk assists saw Tim Ashbridge with a pair and singles to Suppelsa and Clarence Stephenson. minutes to play in the game Greg Fitzgerald was set up by Vanderligt and McEnaney for the insurance marker. Sean Ellis turned in a strong game in a checking role as he threw a blanket over the Sound's top gunner and was able to draw five penalties in the process. In the series opener at the Scugog Arena Saturday night Ryan Ridgway netted the winner early in a ten-minute OT period . on a nicely executed two on one break. McEnaney broke in on the right side and fed a perfect pass to Ridgway who had an easy tap- in to make it 4-3. This game looked like it might go in favour of the Sound who had built a 3-1 lead with just two minutes left in regulation. John Ennis made it 3-2 with a short-handed effort as he was left all alone at the side of the Sound net and took a pass from Ellis to beat goalie Ted Brethour cleanly. Coach Dave Barkey hooked Willetts for an extra attacker . and it paid off with 36 seconds . left. Brethour had trouble smothering a rebound and the puck skittered onto the stick of Brad MacArthur who promptly fired a back-hand into the wide open cage. Scott Heasman and Vanderligt drew the assists. The Ace replies came from Gary Lance, Jason Warner and Ivan Geer. Single assists in this losing affair went to Ken Little, Todd Healey, Mark Decosta, Robert Evans and sponsor Wayne Taylor. Ray Gibson came up big in the Hawk cage to fight off the Ace surge in the dying minutes of the final period. Game Two saw the return of Bill VanCamp inspire his Pizza Delight Devils to a 7-5 victory over the Monsma Chargers in an unusual scoring "free-for-all" during the final frame. With just minutes remaihing to a "tidy" Devil win, the Chargers pulled out all stops to give the crowd an exciting scoring parade as the clock wound down! . The Devils had a big team effort as Bill VanCamp and Bart Mosport gets Trans Am sponsor Mosport Park has announced that Hy and Zel's will sponsor the SCCA Trans-Am race to be held as part of the Player's 200 weekend May 20-24. "We are very pleased that Hy and Zel's has decided to sponsor the trans-Am during the Player's 200 weekend," said Mosport president Harvey Hudes. "Obviously, they see the tremendous marketing value that an event of this magnitude can offer and jumped on the opportunity to get involved with this. We are delighted to have Hy and Zel's join the Mosport family of major sponsors," he said. Zel Goldstein, CEO of Hy and Zels' said "motor racing will allow us to increase the awareness of all our stores to the public at large. The Trans-Am series has a long and celebrated history with Mosport and so we chose to get involved with the series that has the best association with this track." As part of the sponsorship deal, Hy and Zel's with co-promote the event with a five dollar discount coupon offered through its flyer distribution. The sound opened the scoring in the first as Craig Brown beat Willetts with a shot over the blocker. Key Bar got that one back at 11:17 when MacArthur was able to deflect a shot over Brethour with a s to Heasman and Vanderligt. Parry Sound pylled into a 3:1 lead early in the third on goals by Holmes and Brown before Key Bar scored the two late markers to tie the contest and Now set the stage for the overtime victory. Port Perry started to play a more physical game in the third period, taking adyantage of their size and strength to bump the Sound players off the puck. The Port Juveniles defeated Parry Sound In overtime Saturday at the Scugog Arena ana won game two Sunday on the road. in photo above that's Jeff Card looking for a loose puck. Aces in SHL playoff tilt Wagar notched a pair each and singles went to Tony Oxley and Lee Wilbur. "Captain" Callery had three assists while Jim Duncan+had a pair, and singles went to Wagar, Wilbur, "Red" Stevenson, Ray Zaparanuik and Terry Flieler. The Charger "mini comeback" saw Steve Groves with a hat trick and an assist. Larry Pilkey and Robert VanCamp had single tallies each. Al Sibbald chipped in three assists, while Bob Beveridge and two, and singles went to Pilkey and Larry Jackson. Fortunately for the league, the VanCamp boys see action on separate teams! All three family members figured in this week's scoring. Game Three settled back down to playoff hockey as the Crandell's Gamblers took to the ice against the Van World Sharks. This one saw exciting end-to-end action with strong goaltending by Shark keeper Bill Eade, and Gambler fill-in Shawn Parker. However, it was Bill Eade who maintained the shut- out as the Sharks skated to a 3-0 victory and a share of first place in playoff action. Shark forwards Randy Prosser, Richie Lefort and Hprvey Williams each contributed a goal and an assist. Rick Olaisen had a single assist as the Sharks found their fourth win in five games. Game Four saw the Pineridge Phantoms leave the gate eager for a victory to tie the Van World crew atop the playoff standings! The Compton Comets kept things close for a couple of periods, but then the Phantoms turned on the power to cruise to a 4-1 victory and a share of first overall. "Legend" Sheehey led the Phantom attack with a goal and two assists. Brian "Chief" Cowie, Al Bonner and Ed Olsen all found the twine with singles. Assists saw Cowie, John Harman, Mike Geer and George Gladish hit the score sheet with one apiece. The lone Comet reply came from Steve Conners assisted by Todd Wilbur. It appears that the "Satellite Crew" needs to get things rolling to avoid a certain "Bowl" encounter! Game Five saw Round One leader, Fitzgerald's Clippers come out with a sub-par effort for the second week in a row, and end up on the low end of a 3- 1 score to the Harrison Blazers! The Clippers took the lead on a goal by Fred Moffatt from Kevin Reid and Dave Dickson, but the Blazers countered at the buzzer to end the first period on a marker by Doug Bronson from Steve Dunn and Dave Milton. Neither team could gain the edge in a scoreless second frame. It was the Blazers who showed yp in the third as John Mackey and Doug Bronson with his second, found the net. Assists went to Milton, John Robertson and Scott Davis as the Blazers improved their playoff record to a pair of victories. As reported last week, nothing is for sure in SHL playoff action! At 5:00 PM the Pee Wee Legionaires will take on Mooretown and at 7:00 PM the Pee Wee Overhead Doors will resume their series with Mooretown as well. At 9:00 PM, the Port Perry Key Bar Juveniles are scheduled to take on Parry Sound. However, Port Perry leads this best of five two games to none and could wrap the series with a victory Friday evening in the"Sound. On Sunday at 3:00 PM, the Legionaires will see action against Mooretown at the Scugog Arena. :
