Port jumped out to a 4-1 lead thanks to the strong inspired play from Katherine with two goals and an assist Also helping out in the scoring were Stacey with a goal and assist, Leanne D. with a goal, and Rhea and Sarah with one assist each Any lead, no matter how great, has to be protected, and any shift in momentum can change the entire game, and that's exactly what happened with Richmond Hill putting on the pressure and getting back to even ground With five minutes left, our Port girls went back on the attack, looking for the go-ahead goal with several good scoring opportunities but the Richmond Hill goalie came up with the saves to help preserve the tie On Bunday March 6, we travelled to Brooklin for and exhibition game against the Whitby Novice B select team and were caught flat-footed as the Whitby team surprised Port to the tune of 10-6 Our regular goaltender (and a super one too), Jill, was given the night off between the pipes and played just as intensely on defense and even scored her first goal of the season on a long shot from over the blue line that got past the Whitby goalie Playing in net for the first time was Shannon and she put in a solid effort with some good stops on the Whitby opponents. Port's scorers were Stacey with three, Leanne L. and Katherine with one each. Assists came from Kimberley with two. Sarah and Jill with singles On Saturday, March 12, Oshawa was our next opponent with the Rockettes prevailing in a 7-6 see-saw battle that featured some rough play and chippiness on the ice. Nicole put us out in front with her hard shot to the corner with Stacey assisting. Then Sarah made it 2 0 on a great effort from behind the net and around in front, scoring on a backhand shot But Oshawa's #15 got by our defense for three in a row in less than a minute to end the first period 3-2 Stacey scored two quick goals with Kimberley assisting on the first to put us back in the lead 4 3, but Oshawa fought back in front 5-4 with the next two goals. Now it was Port's turn for getting the lead back with Leanne D. taking a pass from Katherine and driving for the net, scored the tying goal and then Stacey picked up her third of the game for a short-lived 6-5 margin Oshawa's #15 (five goals for the day) got them back on even turf with five minutes left but Port won the game on Stacey's fourth of the game with Nicole assisting with only 1:13 remaining The Rockettes final game of the league schedule was in Brooklin on Sunday, March 13 against rival Whitby Petite B's. The Port girls needed a big effort and a win in this one to keep their hopes alive for a birth in the league championship game, with the two top teams advancing to the final And their strong play and hard work paid off with Pred's crew PORT PERRY TIRE & WHEEL Automotive ® Farm Commercial ® All Brands Check our Prices Before You ! a ILELERS PETRO C NADA 29 Simcoe St, Port Perry 985-8177 skating to a 8-2 victory The big gun for the Rockettes was Stacey with another four goal outburst and a solid two way game. Also, although not making the scoresheet for these games, the improved play from Alaina, Heather and Shannon has been a great contribution to the overall play and success of the team Now, a waiting game to see who makes the final, plus the excitement and anticipation of the upcoming Regional Championships at Easter for the Reg I final in which they had to compete against District Champions from as far East as Peterborough to as far West as Oakville The competition also included Metro Toronto Chdmpions. Scugog represented itself well winning a third place finish in the 11 year old girls category RH. Cornish literally blew the competition away in her division sinking 15 of 25 shots. Her closest competitor managed only 11 In his division, Mark Heffern was in a heated contest with a Toronto champion. Showing great composure, Mark finally defeated his opponent in triple overtime. Taryn Izatt-Galloway of Cornish put in a spunky performance to finish third in her category, as did Cawker's Emma Marshall All Champion score cards are now sent to the Provincial co- ordinating committee and matched against the scores of other Champions in other parts of the Province.
