> 3 -- Beugog Citizen -- Tu day, March 15, 1994 pa New volunteers needed to keep Canoe the Nonquon from going under for good After celebrating its 25th anniversary last summer, Canoe the Nonquon may not get a paddle in the water this June unless new volunteers are found to help organize and run this event which has been a much- enjoyed Port Perry tradition for 80 many years New volunteers are badly Emerg. A decision will be made later this week on whether to add more staff in the emergency department at Community Hospital in Port Perry Hospital officials are expecting the department to be busier than usual with doctors offices closed for March Break at Medical Associates Hospital administrator Dave Brown said Monday staff will needed because several members of the organizing committee have decided to retire after putting in many years and countless hours service Bill Brock, a member of the Scugog Historical Society, which has run Canoe the Nonquon since it started, told the Citizen tha current committee members busier monitor the emergency department and "adjust the levels if they are needed." He said that with the doctors offices shut for the week, members of the public visiting the emergency department should expect a slightly longer than usual wait "We will handle the people as they come into the department," he said just want to step down. Canoe the Nonquon has been a valuable source of revenue for the Scugog Museum over the last 25 years, raising in excess of $100,000. Mr. Brock said that while the future of Canoe the Nonquon is iffy at best this year without new volunteers, the Scugog Triathlon will most certainly die unless new people come forward to take over the organization For the last three years the Triathlon has been run the same first weekend in June as Cange the Nonquon, and Mr. Brock suggested the Triathlon would be a suitable event for a local service club He said it is not necessary for the Triathlon and Canoe the Nonquon to be held on the same weekend, as has been the case the last three years But Canoe the Nonquon must keep its first weekend in June date to avoid conflicts with other canoe races during the summer months.
