Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, March 15, 1994 --31 4 PPHS students discuss i issues of concern by Doug Taylor Safety Issues, intolerance and attitudes of students were discussed Monday, February 28 by parents, staff and students of Port Perry High School. Sandra Riches, principal at Port Perry High School, created the groups with the co-operation of staff and the parents advisory committee. Thiough the day there were 16 groups with four groups each period held in the school's cafeteria. "We really don't feel that there is a safety problem but staff and students felt the issues needed to be assessed" Ms Riches told the Citizen last week. "Its a great chance for the students to share their thoughts and with the focus groups being student based it allows them to expand more." The questions were created by the teachers which allowed the students and staff to co-operate together to address the issue. "We were pleased to find out that students feel safety at P.P.H.S isn't a big problem but some concerns were addressed." said Ms. Riches The students felt uncomfortable with some dark hallways and the Walkie Talkies carried by the principal are intimidating to some students. "We have started to take action by having an electrician in to fix the dark hallways. The Walkie Talkies are for easy communication access used in all secondary schools. Mr Morrison, the previous principal, carried one unnoticed on his belt.Unfortunately I don't wear too many belts" Ms Riches told the Citizen. Another concern was students intolerance of other students who are different in some way. This of course is an issue that will have to be tackled carefully. "This gets into people's values and as a staff we have to look at the tolerance and understanding of students.The students have to treat each other with respect" said Ms Riches. The smoking issue was also addressed. Students feel that a smoking area on school property away from the front door would help improve the image of the school. It is also a safety issue with students spilling out onto Rosa Street. "This is a much bigger issue and many changes will be needed. We will have more results at a later date" said Ms. Riches.
