Scugog councillor battles Z Seugog Citizen -- Tuesday, March 15,1904 --7 4 serious health problems WwW W by Heather McCrae When Ward I Councillor. Ken Carruthers, learned last week the cancer that thr d him k But, if this wasn't enough to deal with, he also suffered a slight stroke halfway through last fall had disappeared his reaction was one of total shock and disbelief. "It was just too simple and good to be true" is how he related it to the Citizen. Last fall Mr. Carruthers learned he had cancer. After experiencing a sore throat most of the summer, and finally thinking it may be caused by more than just air conditioning, he saw an ear, nose and throat specialist who discovered a lump in his tongue. Last October tests confirmed the lump to be malignant Mr. Carruthers told the Citizen the first thing he did, upon learning the news, was put his affairs in order Soon after the diagnosis was made, Mr. Carruthers started radiation treatment at the Bayview Cancer Clinic, right up until the end of January. Doctors at the clinic told him he had a common type of cancer that [oral responds to radiation eatments his treatm and is now taking physiotherapy on his left arm which has limited use, one of the side effects of the stroke. Mr. Carruthers told the Citizen the stroke was more of a shock to him than the cancer, itself. Mr. Carruthers told the Citizen when he entered the cancer clinic, he did so with apprehension and fear, but the staff were so wonderfully supportive that he left every time with a positive feeling. "You never felt abandoned when you were at the clinic" he told the Citizen. Patting his stomach, he says, with a twinkle in his eye, that he knew he should lose some weight but doesn't recommend this to be the route to do it. He's lost forty pounds, due to the liquid meal replacement he's been on since the treatments began. Mr. Carruthers says he will always be a patient at the Bayview Cancer Clinic for the rest of his life and will continue with check-ups every two months until a year from now More break-ins Durham Police say there were several more break-ins and thefts in Scugog Township over the last week. On March 9 at a residence on Concession Three, thieves made off with a snowmobile trailer, a riding mower worth about $2,000 and a variety of tools, also worth about $2,000 On March 11, thieves pried open a patio door at a home on Concession two and made off with about $1500 worth of household items including a TV, stereo and cellular phone. On March 11 a 1994 Polaris snowmobile was reported missing from a house in the Epsom area And thieves broke into the Ice P 3-3 Palace on the Port Perry waterfront recently and made off with a four wheel 1986 red Kawasaki all terrain vehicle. r and then will have annual check- ups. Regarding his absence from council, Mr. Carruthers told the Citizen, "I'm sure that the constituents of the ward are concerned but they shouldn't be. We have on council a selection of the most honourable and finest politicians who have picked up the slack since my illness. They've kept me informed and made sure the interests of Ward I have been looked after". Mayor Howard Hall has been in touch with him every week while councillors Marilyn Pearce and Ken Gadsden have kept him up to date on council matters. "The Township is in very good hands with the current council" he told the Cititzen. At the cancer clinic Mr. Carruthers saw many people being treated for the disease from little children to senior citizens. "I've had sixty wonderful years. It's so sad seeing these young children and their families dealing with the illness. If I could be as brave as many of them. . . Life is so unfair sometimes" he said. "T've learned through my visits to the clinic that there are people with far more serious problems than I have. I'm thankful I'm able to overcome mine and have great empathy for those who suffer from this disease." Mr. Carruthers is very optim- istic about his political future and a return to his municipal duties at the end of May. All at Guaranteed Low Prices! UNITED CARPET.
