POY All-Ontario crown for Port Juveniles There will be another all- Ontario hockey championship banner hanging in the Scugog Arena. And for the first time since the 1959-60 season, this one will say "Juvenile," as the Key-Bar Office Equipment squad did what they had to do on a snowy Wednesday night in New Hamburg, just north of Kitchener. With a three games to none lead in this best of seven against New Hamburg, Key-Bar fashioned a 6-3 victory for a series sweep and the coveted Doug Hearn trophy. But don't be mis-led by the 6-3 final score. The game was much closer than that--much closer. In fact, with just over two inutes to play in reg thing were tied 3-8. And were it not han some brilliant goaltending by Mike and Matt Willetts, New bd would have enjoyed 'a comfortable lead to force a fifth game. But suddenly, as they have on more than one occasion along the playoff trail to the all-Ontario finals, the Xey-Bar via Havers decided to get the job done and for all. With 2:14 left on-the clock in the old New Hamburg Community Centre, Chad Kearns gobbled up a loose puck about 15 feet in front of the cage and found the net with a shot along the ice. That made it 4-3 and there was suddenly new life on the Port Perry bench. Then Kearns struck again with "1:43 left on the clock and it was almost a carbon copy of his previous goal. The puck took a Port Perry bounce off the back- boards, squirted into the slot where Kearns calmly whipped it behind New Hamburg netminder Bryan Wettlaufer. The = celebrations were underway in the final minuté when Sean Ellis really put the icing on the cake as he fired an empty netter to make the final 6- 3. To say that Key-Bar started slowly in this game would be an under-statement. They looked sluggish and tentative through Mike Tripp and Matt Willetts shared the goaltending chores equally in the championship game. period one and New Hamburg took full advantage with sustained pressure around the the board, and perhaps his best stop was with the trapper on a shot that had wo corner written all over it. Despite the sluggi gish start, Key- Bar drew Boat blood at 10:02 when Ryan Ridgway blocked a puck at his own line, steamed down the left side and rifled a slap shot from well out that ufer on the trapper side. This was a short-handed effort by Ridgway. the top of faceoff circle to knot things at threes. That set the stage for Kearns to go to work with his two quick' goals and for Ellis to wrap it all up with the empty netter, As one might expect when the' final seconds of this game finally ticked away, it was a jubilant bunch of young men who mobbed each other on the ice. There were bear hugs all around from the staff' Dave Barkey, Jamie Menzies, Paul Wylie and Carl Fitzgerald. 'After a couple of "victory laps" $l around the ice and a team photo, the celebrations moved to a tiny dressing 'room where the * flowed, coach Barkey found himself in the shower fully clothed, and everyone connected with this team had the chance to fully savour a-well-deserved victory. At 9:12 of the second, Ridgway got his second of the game, again using the big shot from the left side to rifle the puck to the corner, this time off a pass from Sean McEnane; y-. * That was all the scoring in the middle frame as the Key-Bar gang slowly discovered their skating legs and cooled out the New Hamburg attack. At 1:51 of the thiyd, Ridgway did it again, completing a natural hat trick on a rare Port Perry power play. Key-Bar's Brad MacArthur controlled a puck behind the New Hamburg cage, waited for Ridgway to move into position in the slot, fed him a perfect pass and he snapped it Jeamly into the corner That 8-1 oy looked like it might hold up, but New Hamburg, playing in front of a partisan home-town crowd, refused to go down without a Shane Gerder took advantage of a long two man power play at 7:48 to shovel a puck behind Perry New Hamburg's Ross Herald found the range on a shot from
