Pineridge Tweens end Ringette season The Pineridge Sports Tweens rounded out their season not only playing for the 'C' division league championship but also traveling to Colborne to compete checking and superb goaltending held Oshawa scoreless until the two minute mark of the first. Port gave it every they had in the second, however, Oshawa and this was by far the best game of the series. This game featured end to end action, the lead changing hands several times, thrilling rushes, great in the 'B' pool regional championships (figure that out). Our game for the league. championship took place March 29 and was against our arch rival Ajax, and it was a dandy. End to end action, great goaltending, parents and grandparents going wild. Port took an early two goal lead on a pretty goal by Leanne assisted by a determined Lisa and a great individual effort by Jenn I. Ajax got one back midway through the first. The Tween's managed one more before the period ended when Diana set Leanne up perfectly for a beauty goal. Port took a three to one lead into the second but could not maintain it as Ajax scored four unanswered goals to take the game and the championship 6-3. Friday and Saturday (April 1 and 2) our team travelled to Colborne for the regionals and we knew we were in for a tough four games. If we could keep the scores close and win a game we could go home knowing we had done our very best. Our girls did just that. Oh, you may say to yourself when you read the scores 'gee:, they weren't very close.' Let me tell you against the teams we were playing these were great scores. We started the weekend out against Oshawa. Our girls had beaten this team only once all year. Port jumped to an early lead on a gutsy effort by Jenn D. as she broke through the defense to score unassisted. Great defense, wonderful back tt lentlessly scoring three goals throughout the period. Final score 4-1 Oshawa. Our next game pitted us against Pickering (we played this team once early in the season and they beat us 13 to 0). The score of this game indicates how much our girls had improved as we lost 8-3. Pickering went up 3-0 before Diana scored on a great solo effort in the later stages of the first. Pickering scored one more to end the first 4-1. Pickering scored three more before Port sharpshooters Jenn I. assisted - by Lisa and Jenn D. got on the score sheet with two awesome goals. Pickering rounded out the scoring in the last minute of play. Sunderland was next on tap. Words cannot describe how well every one of our girls played. Their heart, their determination and the encouragement they gave to each other is what team sport is all about. This game also featured Jenn D. in net and Jenn H. playing centre and both played super. Sunderland may have scored six goals (and it took them 11 minutes to net their first) but the prettiest was Port's lone goal scored with 33 seconds left on the clock. This was a picture perfect goal started by ne with a dead on pass to Jenn I. who in turn made a perfect pass to Melissa who made no mistake blasting the ring by the Sunderland goalie. Folks this lone goal was like a victory to us. As in game three Jenn D. played net and Jenn H. centre. 'Whitby got things rolling scoring in the first minute of play. Port came right back on a fine solo effort by Melissa. The Tweens took the lead after Amelie made a beauty pass to charging Jenn H. who flipped it past Whitby's netminder. Whitby eame right back with two goals to again take the lead. Port took the lead back scoring the next three goals, Leanne pulled our team even on a fancy solo effort. Five minutes later Leanne spotted a flying Jenn H. who scored her second of the " Whitby managed to get to within one when they scored with two minutes left on the clock. - With eight seconds remaining in the first Jackie made a great pass to put Jenn I. in scoring position and let me tell you she rarely makes a mistake putting this one by the Whitby netminder easily. Port started the second with a 6-4 lead. We were playing well, we had the momentum and we thought we had a good chance to win. Lisa and Amy hooked up for the next goal. Amy, showing real poise, put a pass right on Lisa's stick who immediately put it past the goalie. We traded the next two goals with ours being scored by Jenn H. (her third of the game) on 12 seconds remaining. Port took this hard fought game 8-7. On behalf of coaches Lisa Cooper and Gord Imrie, our manager Dot Hooker, and Lreiner Steve Holt, 1 would like ly thank our Pineridge Sports, our parents and especially our girls, for a Hine ringette season.
