Lobby group pushes for cancer radiation facility for Durham patients Cancer patients in Durham Region who need radiation therapy are faced with travelling to Toronto, Kingston and even Thuncer Bay for this life-saving treatrient. But Citizens for a Cancer Cente are working to change that. The group has launched a letter writing campaign to convince Ontario Health Minister Ruth Grier that a radiation treament facility is needed at the Oshawa General Hospital. "We are overwhelmed by the response and by the need for radiation therapy to treat cancer in our own community," said Maryhnne Sholdra, who along with Sylvia Blomme and Donna Kingdon, have spear-headed the ign from the tr centry in Durham. The group was at the Oshawa Centre Mall last Saturday 'morning asking shoppers to fill out a form and mail it to the Ontario Health Minister. And the Citizens group will be doing the same thing each Saturday morning for the rest of this month Ms. 8holdra said that aside from the fact a radiation centre would save cancer patients the inconvenience of travelling for their treatments, the Oshawa General Hospital currently meets all the requirements of a host hospital for such a centre. And she said there could be savings of up to $10 million if this centre was included in the design of the new north wing of the hospital. "We are hoping that Ruth Grier will take heed of what the people of Durham are saying," she said Saturday. The campaign has the solid support of Durham MPP Gord Durham East MPP Gord Mills and Al Pitkey MPP Oshawa are strong supporters of Maryanne Shoidra and Sylvia Bloome who are Tobbying the Ontario government for a radiation treatment centre for Durham Region cancer patients at the Oshawa General. Mills and Oshdwa MPP Allan Pilkey, who were both on hand Saturday morning to help with the letter writing campaign.
