Selling Scugog as a great place to visit, anytime The Scugog Chamber of Commerce and the Township council i joined forces last Sunday with an information booth at the Metro East Trade Centre in Pickering. The reason was to promote Scugog as a place to visit any time of the year, and there were four representatives at the booth all day to hand out brochures and answer questions. Chamber of C ident Alissa Smith, past president Bill Dowson, and councillors David Dietlein (Ward 4) and Ken Gadsden (Ward 3) said the effort and cost was more than worth it. Well over 200 people stopped at the booth to look at the display of colour photos of Township events, and pick up-the broghuyes and pamphlets which outline Yeti is going on in n Seugog and hy ; it's a great place for a visit. Most people have heard of Port Perry and Lake § Scugog, said Mr. Dowson, adding that many people who visited the booth were surprised to find that Scugog is just a short 30 minute drive from . Pickering and eastern Metro. And he said people stopping at the booth expressed much interest in the fishing opportunities on Lake Scugog. Part of the booth display included two large stuffed fish--a muskie and a large mouth bass--both' of which are highly prized by sports anglers. Not only were visitors to the Scugog booth interested in the tourist attractions, Mrs. Smith said several wanted information on opening a busi in the T hip, while still others wanted to know the price of houses and what kind of community ities are ilable for resid ta of Scugog. In recent weeks; the future of Canoe the Nonquon had been in some doubt, but the race has received strong support from the Ontario Marathon Canoe Racing Association, and there are new members of the volunteer committee that runs this event, Bill Brock told the Citizen. ,. ° It will be run over the same course (down the Nonquon River and Lake Scugog) and there will'be the same number of categories for canoeists as in previous years, he said. "We'll find out this year if the race has had its day and the community doesn't want it any longer," he said. This year is the 25th anniversary of the Scugog Shores Museum. Canoe the Nonquon was founded 26 years ago to raise money for the M ---- useum. i As well as the 20 mile Canoe the Nonquon on June 4, there will be a Scugog Cup the same day. This is a short paddle from Kent's Bay to Palmer Park as a fund-raiser in which groups, organizations and individuals can challenge each other to see who raises the most money and who can complete the course.
