. < Beugog Citizen -- Tuesday, May 3, 1994 -- 31 Greg Sherwood and Brandon Hammond. Canoe the Norquon is up and paddling for its 26th year Plans are well underway. for the 26th running of Canoe the Nonquon. This event is the biggest and oldest canoe race in Ontario and is gaining popularity nationally. Last yedr enttants from all over Ontario, from Parry Sound td Londomr and from Ottawa to" Cornwall took part, as well as three canbes from Quebec and one from New York State. A total of 102 participated in last ,year's race. The race is sanctioned by the Ontario Marathon Canoe Race Association which is affiliated with Canoe Ontario. In order to attract more young people to this year's event, the * Committee has decided to re- introduce the 14 year old and under categary. This categdry was dropped a number of years ago an effort to reduce administration. PS However, it was noted that "many of today's older local canoeists got their start in the 14 and under category many years ago. It is hoped that the re- instatement would continue that tradition and again attract younger competitors. The 14 and under and the 17 and under categbwies start with all compétitors on the Nonquon River at the 12th C ion of Nonquon river. This is carried out as par of the concern .that the, Lake section can provide too many hazards for the young competitors. The _other categories, including the Kayaks, C1 (one person racing canoes) and the C2 (two person racing canoes) all the way "to the purely recreational, continue on down the Lake t the foot of Queen Street to complete 26.Km."(16 miles) of canoeing. * The entry fee is $25 per canoe but competitors are encouraged to gather pledges for their canoe. There are prizes for the mos? pledge money collected. All proceeds from the race go to the Lake Scugog Historical Socigty in its operation of the Scugog Shores Museum. ) Medals will be awarded to the first three finishers in each category. The Triathalon has been cancelled this year. A new Special event, The Scugog Cup, is to be held this year. This is a fun event in which groups are encouraged to dress up and compete in "anything that floats". This is a short distance, w, t event.
