Ont. braces for rabies invasion Animal health officials in Ontario are bracing for an invasion of rabies from the south. Raccoon rabies has been slowly moving north through the United States, and cases of the disease have been confirmed in New York State, just 20 km south of Ontario border along the Niagara Peninsula. Last week, the Ontario government announced it will be spending $500,000 on a variety of programs to contain the spread of raccoon rabies once it shows up in Ontario, and to speed up research on on oral vaccine for raccoons. 'The strain of rabies carried by raccoons was first detected in the 1940's in Florida and has been pushing its wae northward ever since. Dr. John Churchill with the federal health of animals department in Bowmanville said last week it's only a question of time before raccoon rabies crosses the border into Ontario. "Raccoons are notorious 'hitch-hikers." They could arrive here in a camper, on a truck train," he said, adding the disease could show up first just about anywhere in the province. And because raccoons often tend to live in towns and even large cities, this presents more of a concern for human health than the fox strain of rabies. "We encourage local agencies, municipalities, wildlife and pet - pd Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, May 3, 1994 -- 5 associations to p. te Rabies Awareness Month through their membengips, clients and education programs. Raccoon rabies is rabies, which means if people take precautions we have been outlining the past few years, they will be able to protect themselves, their children and their pets." The Ministry of Health has set up a toll free line for the public to get direct information on raccoon rabies and rabies generally.
