Small retailers warned Z Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, May 10, 1994 -- 15 to watch for bogus money Durham Police are warning small retailers to be on the look- out for counterfeit money. A large number of bogus bills have been showing up in Durham recently, mostly in the southern areas, and most are being passed through small retail outlets, said Staff Sgt Sandy Ryrie last week Since the beginning of the year, there have been 100 cases of false bills in Durham, compared to just 23 in the same period last year, he said. In April alone, 41 counterfeit bills were passed in both Canadian and American currency Some of the bills appear to be brand new and others are well worn A common feature is that the paper quality is not as good as the genuine bills, and red and blue secunty fibres present in bona fide bills, have been reproduced on the face of the phony bills using ink In addition to the phony American $20 bills, there has been a number of Canadian $20 Volunteers required The Durham Supervised Access Program offers children opportunities to maintain and build relationships with non custodial parents, or other family members, in a supervised safe, neutral and child focused setting Program volunteers are needed to supervise the visits which occur on Saturday afternoons in Pickering, Sunday afternoons and Tuesday evening in Oshawa, and on Saturday mornings in Port Perry For more information, please call the Durham Supervised Access Program at 668-6868 ( ) HAPPY SPECIAL BIRTHDAY Grama Love - Kailly and the Gang! Lordy, lordy! Look who's 40 on May 12th, 1994 Love - Dad and $100 bills passed recently. Most of the $20's and all of the $100's had been re-produced by a bubble jet printing process. The phony bills can be detected by careful inspection of the background en the notes which will reveal a composition of tiny multi-coloured dots instead of the properly printed background Retailers should also inspect the small curved lines to the left of the Queens head. They are not perfect as in real notes. Another way of detecting false bills is by lifting the blue or red fibres from the paper. If they can be lifted whole, the bill is probably genuine. If the blue and red lines can be scratched off, the bill is likely fake. Phony bills may also feel smooth and waxy to the touch, and a real bill will have raised printing in several areas. As well, authentic Canadian notes have green silk dots that can be removed from the paper. Mechanical reproductions of these green dots will leave a printed dot on the top of the paper which cannot be remayed from the paper in one piece Anyone who suspects they have received a phony bill should contact the Durham Police Fraud Squad immediately at 679-1520 Extension 228 The Kent Farndale Gallery In the Scugog Libary Is hosting a show by artist Jerome Coulas, shown here with one of his paintings "Our Clover Pasture."
