Ontario Premier Bob Rae insisted over the weekend there will be no fall election. The NDP mandate to govern the province runs well into 1995, so there is no legal reason for Rae to take us to the polls until then. Unless, of course the economic climate improves substantially over the summer. Despite some deep troubles that just won't go away in Ontario (like the number of people without work,) there are indications from many sources which suggest strongly that the overall economic climate is on the up And don't forget that budget which contains no tax hikes and no new taxes for the first time in several years. It's the kind of budget politicians like to mention when they knock on your door during an election campaign. Fall election/spring election, only Mr. Rae knows for sure. But Ontario Conservative leader Mike Harris is gearing up for a run at the NDP no matter when the writ is issued tn a shek package released last week called the "common sense revolution," Harns unveiled what surely will be five main planks in his election platform They are: a 30 per cent cut in provincial income tax over three years resulting in a savings to the average family of $4,000 1n those three years a.20 per cent cut in non-pnonty government spending --abohtion of the Employer Health Tax for small business, a five per cent cut in WCB premiums, a five year freeze on Hydro rates and a repeal of Bill 40 ~a reduction of provincial MPPs from 130 to 99, and a balanced budget in four years Harris says his "revolution" will "reaignite the Ontario economy and creaite more than 725,000 new jobs." If that's not the kick-off to an election campaign, we don't know what is If Harms can cut provincial income taxes by 30 per cent, freeze Hydro rates for five years, cut spending by 20 per cent and the number of MPPs by 31, create 725,000 new jobs and still balance the budget in four years time, he will have done something because all that is a mighty tall order. Harns' common sense revolution looks interesting. At very least it should be scrutinized carefully by experts from all political sides And if nothing else, it will be interesting to watch the NDP and the Liberals attack this plan, no matter when Mr. Rae calls the next election o - Shoot-out, again Remember back in February when the Canadian Olympic Hockey team had to settle for a silver medal after losing the final game to Team Sweden by virtue of a shoot-out? There was a huge hue and cry from one end of Canada to the other that the shoot-out was a dumb way to decided a hockey tournament of this stature, indeed a dumb way to decide any tournament Well, on Sunday afternoon, the shoe fell on the other foot as Team Canada defeated Finland 2-1 to win the World Hockey Championship in Milan, Italy The gold medal game was tied 1-1 after 60) minutes. The teams played through a scoreless overtime period, then went to the shoot out to decide the winner Each team gets five shots on the other team's goalie, and Canada scored three times to Finland's two Naturally, all hockey fans in Canada were pleased to see the team come home with the gold medal \ But the shoot-out is still a terrible way to determine a winner, no matter who wins. International Hockey should be looking to change its rules to let a tie be broken:the old- fashioned way: play until somebody scores a goal \ Shoot-outs have no place in the game, least of all in the Olympics or the World Championships Having said that, we would like to add "waita-go-Canada!" THIS IS YOUR LOVE BORAT CAPTAM... Yo BoB CALL YOUR TRAVEL. AGENT THIS CRUISE IS OVER ... P-- LerTERS TO THE EDITOR Bouquets for To the Editor: It is with great pleasure that | write this, partly to congratulate you on the success of your newspaper. Then, | want to express my very great pleasure to acknowledge the excellent representative we in this area have in the present Ontario government--namely Mr. Gord Mills. He is one of the rare specimens in politics, who actually listens to those whom he represents. Soon after he was elected, | had a lengthy conversation with him, and | got a very positive feeling of a sincere person who cared not for his elevation to politics, but for an honest effort to represent us in the government of Ontario. I believe he has shown this while in office. Personally, as a non-addictive to any party | consider him then and now more than before, a genuine and earnest person Although I cannot condone homosexuality, which my Bible classifies as abominable, but not as a greater sin, which now is among the many popularized sins, | am not what is called homophobic I believe we have to accept this lifestyle, as we have to accept other sinful lifestyles But, I surely would not care to pay for equal rights to have benefits as "married" couples-- no way. Mr. Mills has also expounded his views of health care for so-called "Snow Birds" and others travelling outside of Ontario. He shows guts to oppose the radical measures suggested by a fellow person in the present government. That gives me great confidence in Mr. Mills--and nobody could ever call me a socialist. I call it as I see it. | have voted Liberal, NDP and Conservative. To me, it is important to get a decent representative in government regardless of the party. 1 also much object when a rep has to follow the vote of the caucus, regardless of own beliefs or those of the constituents. I also want to register my disgust with federal MP Alex Shepherd's position on gun control. Is he a member of the infamous US Rifle Association? I voted for him in the last election since I, like most Canadians, wanted to oust the Conservatives under a comical d Mills lghder at the time--the former 1ling out Canada to highly powerful (momentarily) interest groups. At present, I have put my hopes and prayers that Liberal leader Jean Chretien will be good, and I believe, an honest leader for a long time to come. If he gets good assistants, we may get a good government. That is a crux, for a leader to select decent assistants. No one can rule Canada by him or herself. The same, of course, should apply to any company or endeavours. Nobody has all the answers to all situations or conditions. Yours truly, Jack (Jacob) Anonby, Port Perry, Ont. Leather jacket goes missing To the Editor Pine Ridge Garden Club would like to thank all those who made our first Annual Internatienal Smorgasbord such a success However, one unfortunate incident marred the event for the organizers Two black leather jackets were side by side on the coat rack and someone went ofl with the wrong jacket. The jacket which was taken had a special significance for the gentleman who lost it - he would be very happy to have it returned, along with the set of keys which was in the pocket. The concern is that, with the warmer weather, the coat may be put away until fall, without the person realizing that he has the wrong jacket. If any of your readers attended this function in Nestleton Hall on Saturday, April 30th, wearing a black leather jacket, we ask them to please check their closet to see if they have the missing coat. If they had out of town guests to the dinner, please check with them. The Executive of Pine Ridge Garden Club would like to find the coat for the gentleman who lost it. I can be reached at 986- 4771 and will
