Over one hundred cooking demonstrations, nutrition seminars and food talks were scheduled throughout the three day affair. Nutrition advice and information concerning cholesterol food labels, heart- smart choices and family meal- planning were highlighted. The, re-occurring theme was clear. "The best consumer is the best informed or insightful one." Cooking demonstrations and presentations featured some of Canada's fin#st, including Anne Lindsay, Elizabeth Baird and Marg Fraser, just to mention a few. In a conversation with Anne Lindsay, author of 'Smart Cooking', "The Light Hearted Cookbook' and her latest, 'Anne Lindsay's Light Kitchen', the growing public acceptance of low-fat alternatives is definitely here to stay, Yet, the essential criteria to successful cooking is still heartiness and Flavour! Fresh herbs and spices are key ingredients to be adjusted to personal taste. Low fat but flavourful dressings, sauces, dips, pestos, marinades and salsas are growing trends also. Major food companies as well as smaller entrepreneurs debuted their latest product lines. The best part of the show, naturally, was in the sampling of their foods specialities, Some unique products featured were sundried tomato pesto, vegetable garden patties, 'kamut' pasta, beetroot condiments and wild boar jerky or pate. My favourite ¢hoice was a "Tofutti" frozen dessert which was lactose and cholesterol free. The "Good Food Festival" was a great way to explore the world of good food and great cooking. I look forward to attending next year. Barbequed Veggie Packet New potatoes and carrots may * be scrubbed, leaving the skin on for texture and added nutrients. Have a happy and safe long holiday weekend! - pr TSeugog Citizen -- Tuesday, May 17, 1994 -- 13 Pr Stop sign requested The Scugog Township council roads committee will consider a request to put a stop sign on Old Simcoe Road at the intersection of Victoria Street. The request came to council in the form of a long letter from residents of Old Simcoe Road who say vehicles often travel "well in excess of twice the legal limit (of 50 km/hr.) with no exageration." They write that the 1.4 km stretch of the road from Highway TA south to King Street in Prince Albert is rapidly becoming a serious cause for concern for residents who live there. They want the sign to stop north/south traffic on Old Simcoe Street in the hopes that drivers will have to reduce their speed. They write that the risk of serious injury or mishap in this area will also be reduced. The roads committee will examine the proposal and make a recommendation to the council. home cookin' lynda kendry HOPE CHURCH ¥ CHRISTIAN REFORMED A FELLOWSHIP / 14480 Old Simcoe Rd. BD Cu CHURCH TAKING STALK OF RHUBARB - THE RETURN I wonder what people in the Caribbean talk about when they meet. Do you suppose they remark about how the temperature is the same as it was yesterday? Or the trade winds as warm as over thg past week or month? Our weather certainly does afford us lots to converse about. I gave up long ago listening to weather forecasts and I don't think that I have ever looked for it in the newspaper. Even if I do watch: it on my daily news fixes, | seldom retain the information given, Oh, I do admit if there is a special occasion in the offing or a trip out of town coming up, | do occasionally listen for the long range forecast. I try not to let the weather govern my moods, though - and a good thing too, this year! (I would probably be manic-depressive, wouldn't 17) Even though our growing season seems a little slower on the lake, Patti reported that finally her precious Rhubarb is in fact growing and we should soon be baking the crop in various methods. One of the most popular recipes, featured in this column, has been the Rhubarb 'Streusel Coffee Cake form Susie Baird. It's so good I'm going to repeat it for those of you who missed it back in June of 1992. It could also bé used 'for muffins.
