The purpose the Strategy is to protect ecological integrity of the Oak Ridges Moraine with special emphasis on the natural areas and the quality of water. This project has been three years in the making and could have significant changes for A series of public open houses are planned as it is important for the agricallure community to have input into the process since almost half the Moraine is classified as farmland. In the past, the program was available producers of edible horticulture crops and tobaceo only. "Not only will this program assist the agricultural sector, its benefits will have a spin-off effect on rural communities," said Buchanan. "In this tight economic climate, rural youth must often look to towns and cities for potential employment. At the same timp farmers are trying to reduce the costs of production. This program addresses both concerns. Young people in rural areas can remain close to home and farmers can afford to hire more local young people during peak season," said Buchanan. Since its inception in 1992, SEWAP has provided more than $730,000 to producers of edible horticulture crops and tobacco to hire close to 900 workers. SEWAP is funded by Management Board of Cabinet and is part of the new jobsOntario Summer Employment program that co- ordinates government-funded jobs under one central initiative. "jobsOntario Summer Employment means young people have province-wide access to $51.6 million in summer jobs created by the Ontario government," said Brian Charlton, Chair, Management Board of Cabinet. "This initiative will help 24,000 youth find jobs this summer." e To receive the $3 per hour wage assistance, available under SEWAP, eligible farmers must create a new job that lasts at least 6 weeks, based on a 30 to 40 hour week. SEWAP jobs are open to young people aged 15-25 (or 15-29 if the person has a disability) who are residents of Ontario and eligible to work in Canada.
