Just call us 985-6397 Sarah Churchill gives Tiga a big hug. She's a black Lab that falled to make the grade as a seelng-eye dog but Is now a much loved family pet. See story. Rejected as guide dog, Tiga is a fine pet for family by Heather McCrae A dog that was rejected as a candidate in the Canine Vision Program has now been accepted into the: hearts and home of a Port Perry family. Three dog guide programs sponsored by the Lions Foundation of Canada are the Canine Vision, Special Skills Dogs of Canadd ind Hearing Ear Dogs of Canada. Tiga, @black Labrador, had been donated to the Canine Vision as a pup. Having gone through the entire training process she had failed the rigid requirements that would enable her to become a seeing eye dog and consequently was adopted by John and Joan Scott as a family pet. The process of starting a puppy in the training program until it graduates from one of the 3 programs is a fairly long one. Ruppies are received into the dog guide programs by way of donations from reputable breeders, private individuals and the Lions Foundation has their own breeding kennels too. ' The training begins when it's 8-12 weeks old and placed in a fostdr' family that will take the responsibility of raising the pup, teaching it proper house manners and basic obedience. It's very important to have the puppy raised by a good foster family as these people help establish the dog's personality, attitude and increase or d its ch of b a dog guide. Becoming a foster family to these young pups can be a worthwhile venture and the Foundation is always looking for people who will 'adopt' a dog in its first year" of training. Dog food is supplied and all the basic veterinary expenses are paid for by the Lions Foundation. After a year of being fostered the young dog is recalled to the training centre in Oakville for an assessment of which program it will be best suited for and is assigned to a trainer for another 6-8 mopths of specialized before graduation. Special Skills Dogs are trained to offer assistance for physically, disabled individuals such as pulling wheelchairs, turning switches off/on, opening doors, "retrieving articles, summoning help and other specific needs. Hearing Ear Dogs are trained to alert the hearing impaired to sounds of everyday life, such as smoke detectors, fire alarms, door bells, alarm clocks, telephones, baby cries and more. And, of course, thé Canine Vision 'dog is used to help the blind or visually impaired person. Turn to page 26
