EDITORIALF Nice going A few weeks ago, Maggie McDonald decided to organize a 10 km walk-a-thon through the streets of Port Perry and Prince Albert with all proceeds going to the Food Bank of Operation Scugog. . it for the afternoon of Sunday, May 15. Sunday arrived and it was just about as miserable (weather wise) as one could imagine with heavy, dark skies and a cold drizzle. Still, about 60 walkers arrived for the start in Palmer Park, dressed for the weather and in great spirits. What's more, and this is truly amazing, those 60 walkers brought in over $6500 in pledges. That money will be put to good use by the people who run Operation Scugog's Food Bank. Talk about an example of community spirit. One person comes up with an idea, gets some help from others and carries it off. To everyone involved in this walk-a-thon in any way, we say "nice going." And to organizer Maggie McDonald, we say make next year's walk-a-thon bigger and better. Let's hope you get a little more co-operation from the weatherman Strange offer Scugog councillors David Dietlein and Harvey Graham are right. Speaking at Monday's meeting of council, they #aid the Port Perry Fair Board has no protection if there is a clause in a new lease which gives either the Township or the Fair Board the right to terminate the lease on 12 months written notice. If the Township is prepared to give the Fair Board a new ten year lease for the 22-acre Fairgrounds why should it be able to be terminated in 12 months? As councillors Dietlein said Monday that clause would effectively give the Fair Board a one year lease. No wonder members of the Fair Board are apparently adamant that this termination clause be struck or re-written As councillor Graham stated the termination claude as written now gives the Fair Board no protection at all if the Township should ever want to take the land for ahy reason. If the Township doesn't want to give the Fair Board a new ten year lease, or any lease at all; fine, say it clearly and it will become a huge political issue to be settled this November in the municipal elections. It seems strange to offer a ten year lease that can be terminated either way on 12 months notice. Call a meeting Scugog First Nation Chief Gary Edgar has rejected a suggestion from Durham MP Alex Shepherd for a public meeting soon in Port Perry about plans to build a charitable gaming facility on First Nation land on Scugog Island. Chief Edgar told the Citizen there will be a public meeting but it won't be in Port Perry and it won't be called until all the final details of this facility have been completed. He suggested the meeting will be at the First Nation Community Hall. Nothing wrong with that. A public information meeting 1s badly needed. If the tone of letters to the editor is any indication, this issue of the charitable gaming facility on Scugog Island is contentious and potentially explosive If the location of such a meeting is an issue, we would strongly suggest some kind of "neutral" location. We would also suggest a completely independent moderator for such a meeting ' There seems to be a lot of bad and wrong information floating about since this issue surfaced in an article two weeks ago in an Oshawa newspaper. It's time now to get the correct information onto the public agenda on Scugog Island and indeed for the entire community of Scugog Township. Call a public meeting, anywhere. She drummed up some publicity for this event and scheduled * TRANSLATED FROM THE ORIGINAL FRENCH! THE DAY AFTER QUEBEC INDEPENDENCE « ¥ WHAT DO You MEAN I'M NOT ELIGIBLE FOR. Apparently the large companies have harvested most of the trees available and now want more free rides. The slogan used here is - the future generation planting trees for their future. These young people are being asked to show good will and trust these trees will be for thejr future and not given to the lobbying foresters again. These young people deserve good will in return and the provincial government should be enacting a law which assures us these trees will not be given away as the past growths were. The provincial law states all wood and water resources belong to the government. Past performance shows the government has carelessly allowed harvesting of our forests by the companies with very little return to the people. We need written assurance this won't happen once more when these millions of seedlings become valuable forests. Our young people are not so gullible as to believe hollow promises of the past. Let us have a law which will show these trees planted by the people will truly belong to the people of the future in the future. No more of the giveaway past which disregards the rights of the people. : Doug Wilson, Oshawa Fight just beginning To the Editor: Thank you for printing my letter to your paper concerning the gambling facility on the Scugog Island Mississaugas Reserve. Although edited, the response to my letter has been widespread and positive with active ICasino!' To the Editor: I am pleased that Mr. Aldred sent a letter to the editor for your May 10 edition regarding the plans for a Casino on Scugog Island. Other than this there was no other coverage of the latest developments on the Island. A casino on Scugog Island makes no more sense that a Dump at Yonge and Bloor. I encourage all concerned taxpayers to contact Mr. Gord Mills MPP Durham East, as this seems to be a provincial matter. The other option is to write to letter, members of our group from most of the Island, except those few people who live on the Reserve. Our fight is just beginning against this small minority who are attempting to violate the tranquility of Scugog Island, tamper with water tables and build a massive sewage system. As taxpayers, we pretty well finance the Reserve, as shareholders through the federal tax system. We are going to have our say in blocking this ludicrous proposal. Respectfully, Joel Aldred DFC, Scugog Island. makes no sense P.C. leader Mr. Mike Harris who is currently campaigning with the theme "The Common Sense Revolution" 1 wonder what ever happened to common sense? J. Edmiston, Scugog Island Wish them well To the Editor: I must have missed the Canada Gazette announcement that appointed Joel Aldred Governor of the Principality of Scugog Island. Mr. Aldred seems to enjoy the hallucination, among others, that he speaks for all the Island ratepayers in his recurring fulminations against the activities of the Island Mississaugas.' He does not speak for me, and I wish Chief Edgar and his Band every success in their enterprises. Yours truly, . Patrick Melligan, C.D. Scugog Island.
