n - We } 2. 10--Scugog Citizen Wednesday, May 25, 1994 = After 50 years, th To the Editor: 1 would like to make it clear that I have the utmost respect for Canadian veterans, especially those who fought in the Second World War. This respect is for two reasons: firstly, they were willing to fight and die for a cause they believed in, something I cannot claim to have done, and secondly, becatise they fought a war against fascism, truly an evil ideology. This ideology encouraged racial and religious intolerance among its citizens, even to groups which had lived in the countries for hundreds of years. It also encouraged the use of fear and violence to maintain public order. Most dangerously of all, it used ignorance and nationalism to preach that the rights of the individual were secondary to those of the state, and that individuals must do what they are told, without question. Luckily, 50 years ago, we had our veterans to fight this kind of Fire deaths To the Editor 1 would like to express my disappointment on David Dietlein's vote against the resolution by The Township of Scugog Council to permit greater access for Municipal Fire Departments to enter and inspect residential occupancies, where there may be basement/ancillary apartments. The recent fire deaths (occurging in basement apartments) in Missi=sauga and Brampton were further evidence of the horrible fire death record in Canada and the United States. In 1992, 84% of Ontario fire deaths occurred in residential occupancies and because of this, the Office of the Fire Marshal has recently implemented legislation to upgrade fire safety in low rise and high rise apartments (Sections 9.5 and 9.6 of the Fire Code). Additionally, there has been draft legislation from the Office of the Fire Marshal for two unit residential occupancies (basement/ancidlary apartments). I would be willing to review this draft legislation with you to ensure that you are not under the incorrect 1 ding that "Mi intolerance. But what about I continue to see and hear intolerance towards all minority groups in Canada. Somehow, many Canadians expect them to change or leave, ignoring that most of these people have been in Canada for generations. In last week's paper, there was a call for laws more like those in Singapore, laws which can be described as truly barbaric. However, I have been most frightened to read calls for blind patriotism. Beliefs that we need a melting pot system. Beliefs that everyone should be willing to die for their country or they are cowards. Beliefs that when immigrants come to this country, they should leave garbage (like their religion) at the door. Beliefs that all Canadians should come out of the same mould, because differences are bad. Basically, many Canadians today appear to believe that the freedom of the individual is not as important as pride in ouf" country, just like the fascists once preached. Fifty years ago, Canadians fought against this kind of bigotry, intolerance and blind is asking for things which are too costly and unreasonable, such as sprinkler systems" (as per the Scugog Citizen 1994 05 17) Gord Gettins, Caesarea i lism. It is clear to me that freedom of individuality is threa! in Canada, so we must again go to war against intolerance and bigotry. Minority groups ask Canadians to change their attitudes and accept their differences. Sikhs don't want all Mounties to wear turbans and homosexuals don't expect us to become gay. This is not "submission," but simple tolerance. They are using their right to be individuals, and it is Canada's responsiMlity to protect those rights. That is what our veterans fought for 50 years ago and what 1 hope people are willing to fight for in 1994. David Butler, Seagrave, Ont. Public meeting must be held very soon, To the Editor; Thank you for printing my letter last week regarding my concerns over the proposed Island Casino. I also applaud your editorial that a public information meeting be held. | suggest that this meeting be held soon, before the details of the Casino are finalized. If this does not happen, it is unlikely that the taxpayer will have a say on the issue. Previously, taxpayers had no impact into the $400,000 grant by the Provincial Government to build the Community Hall on the Island Reserve. Also, there was no public information about the three year land use permit given to the Mississaugas by the Provincial Government for 100 acres of Crown land the Island. It did not take long for a gate and "no trespassing" signs to be put up on these 100 acres. Mr. Alex Shepherd, M.P*and Mayor Hall have responded to my concerns. Unfortunately, Mr Gord Mills, M.P.P. has not yet - answered my faxes. I have made up my mind to fight the Casino based on these previous experiences. If you feel like I do, please donate your time and/or money to the Save the Island Committee. If you have another viewpoint - that's okay too - but let's make sure that the taxpayer has a say!
