CHS teacher Ray Ashton retiring from the classroom by Heather McCrae A Cartwright High School teacher will be retiring soon after 34 years in the classroom. Ray Ashton started his teaching career at the little high school in Blackstock in 1960, after graduating from the University of Toronto. Over the next two years, he attended summer school, earning his basic teacher's certificate and three years later he acquired his math specialist certificate. "Teachers were scarce back then," he told the Citizen, "Nothing like the present," As a young boy, Mr Ashton attended Haydon Public School and continued his education at Bowmanville High. Always excelling in math, it was this subject he majored in all the way through university and he's taught the subject throughout his career at Cartwright High School. "I've had an excellent career in teaching," he said. "In many cases I've taught two generations of families". 'One woman remarked to him recently he had taught her, her husband and three of their four children. Music teachers Marg Snider of Prince Albert PS and Rory McGrath of Pringle Creek PS have amalgamated their junior bands to form one large group. They entertained at an assembly last week and will be playing at Canada's Wonderland on June 2. The instrumental music program at Prince Albert school has flourished with _the assistance of music students from PPHS under the direction of Charles White. The combined bands put on a performance at Prince Albert last week and sounded just great.
