Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, June 7, 1994 -- 11 a 'Grads enjoy special party at Sheraton Hotel Last saturday evening, a group of students, in their final year at Port Perry High School, enjoyed their own graduation dinner and dance at the Sheraton Centre in downtown Toronto, an event that was completely independent of the school. The graduation planning committee, of Kendra McCrae, Todd Smart, Emily Smith, Ceilidh Cohoon and John Sanchez circulated a survey late last fall to the final year students, inquiring if there was sufficient interest to have a special graduation party "The response was yverwhelmingly in favour of having our own party" the ee told the Citizen But the decisi was by 1 to have the party attempt to downgrade Port Perry High Scho We respec schoc teachers" told the no means ar ct the com Citize happy ones we'll members We've all memories from had a lot PPHS retain for the rest of our lives. Students would be able to stay overnight at one of many accommodations, thus eliminating the possibility of driving home in the wee hours of the morning. And the big city seemed to have that magic appeal to everyone. Upon checking the list of major hotels, the committee soon discovered the only hotel that still . allowed proms or graduations for teenagers was tthe Sheraton Centre / to the Sheraton Centre ss telephone calls, letters ing the students 'up-to date' on all the plans have been tended to by these five students It all paid off, as last Saturday graduation party, held vic Ballroom grand success Of course, there were a few minor snags the committee had but that's to be expected when you're planning an event of such magnitude for the first time "The planning was all worth it to deal with Township offers summer programs The summer camp program runs from July 9, 1994 to Septe mber 2, 1994. Of course, the Sheraton had stipulations which had to be followed, such as having two 'on duty' metro cops patrolling throughout the evening and having seven adult chaperones. Several parents, older brothers and sisters of the graduates were more than pleased to act as chaperones. Speaking to the Citizen last Saturday evening, the DJ and officers thoroughly impressed with the attitude gnd behaviour of the young crowd and would be happy to chaperone at a Port Perry student function again. Various awards and door prizes were given throughout the evening.
