Running the Galley has meant long hours seven days a week for the McBrides. "It's time for us to take a break," Phil told the Citizen in an interview recently. Once the sale officially closes this week, Phil and Sylvia plan to take it easy and some time this summer they'll be heading east to the Maritimes for a tour of New Brunswick, Noya Scotia and Prince Edward Island. "The community has been good to us," said Phil, "and we have tried to put something back into the community." v Over the years, the business has sponsored sports teams, including a long association with the Gators mens slo-pitch club. Last Thursday evening, members of the Gators club thanked the McBrides and presented them with a painting. Phil has always been an enthusiastic sports fan around Port Perry taking in baseball games in the summer and. hockey matches at the Scugog Arena all winter long. The restaurant at 161 Queen Street has been purchased by sisters Vivi Paraskevopoulos and Dora Zaharis, and they plan to change | the fame to "The Sisters Galley." Minor Hockey pledges $12,000 towards new hall Port Perry Minor Hockey has pledged $12,000 over three years towards the proposed community hall at the Scugog Arena. Outgoing president Grant Laird made the announcement at the annual meeting held last week at the Latcham Centre. Mr. Laird said the orgahization will generate the $12,000 through operation of its crown and anchor wheel at the Port Perry Fair, Festival Days and the up-coming Fields of Dreams slo-pitch tournament on the July 1 weekend. "If Minor Hockey does not support (financially) the new hall, we will never get the second ice pad. The hall is the first step," said Mr. Laird. Scugog Township is proposing to construct this 10,000 square foot hall using infrastructure grant money and municipal funds. However, the Township wants community organizations to commit about $135,000 towards the total cost. Outgoing vice president David Bourgeois stressed at last week's meeting that the $12,000 commitment to the hall would come from "new funds." Funds that have been raised over the past few years specifically for a second pad will not be used for the hall, he stated.
