For weight-watchers, you will notice an increasing assortment of various frozen novelties in the frozen food section of the supermarket. From 'light' popsicles to low-fat ice cream to frozen desserts, many of these products are sweetened also with aspartame. Not to downplay the important role that artificial sweetners play in the diabetic diet especially sweetness in deration is the best guideli If you have a 'sweet tooth', you can actually change your taste preferences. Sweet tolerance, like that of salt, is a matter of habit. Weaning yourself off sweet-tasting foods is not as difficult as it may seem. A gradual decrease in these foods is a good start. When shopping, try not to purchase highly-sweetened snacks and desserts to give your taste buds a chance to become more sensitive to sweetness. (A variety of fruits will help to quell those cravings.) Your favourite dessert recipes can generally be reduced by one third to one half in sugar content without affecting the finished product. After awhile you should notice that your taste buds will adapt to this gradual reduction in sweetness. Some people have been known to even have adverse reactions to artificial sweetners, experiencing 'sweetners depression, 'headaches, irritability and dizziness. You might'be better off learning to like less of the more natural than simply maintaining your "addiction" to sweets by switching to the artificial kind. If your children are raised on less sweet foods also, this will help to adjust their sweet tooth. You be the judge! Kindergarten graduation will take place on June 24. That same evening, the grade eight students, their families and friends will have their graduation dinner and ceremony. The younger children have been working hard on a musical skit which will be their way of saying farewell on this special evening. The various classes have been kept busy with tests and special assignments as the final units in different subject areas are completed. Of course, this season also means end of the year trips. These include a visit to Bowmanville Zoo for kinder- garten, a guided nature hike at Pigeon River Conservation Area for grades one and two, and a visit to Black Creek Pioneer Village for grades three and four. Students there saw what life on a nineteenth century farm was like. Grades five and six spent three days at Fair Glen nature camp, and grades seven and eight enjoyed a three day trip to Ottawa. In sports, our school met last month with nine "other area Christian schools at Trent University for a track and field meet. With strong effort on the part of a number of individuals, we managed to win the small schools trophy. | Our junior soccer team also competed against local schools in a one day tournament held at the soccer fields. Although we did not place, it was a good day of teamwork and healthy competition. home cookin' lynda kendry Yet Another Learning Experience Many, many thanks to # everyone who supported the yard sale that my daughter Patti and I recently held for the Canadian Cancer Society. It was deemed to be a success and as soon as we get the husband's workshop emptied of the "leftovers", everyone will be happy! 1 guess that you could say that we are not the "innocents" that we were before about yard sales. It's not what you sell that becomes important but what doesn't sell! One of the items at the sale was my friend Marlene's poppy seed cake which was sold by the slice and thoroughly enjoyed. It keeps well as it's a moist cake and would probably freeze well too. So if it's ever cool enough again to turn the oven on, here's her recipe. Thanks Marlene! The Rev'd Charles E.
