Both qualities are put to the test when the swat cop is trapped on board a runaway bus rigged to explode if it falls below 50MPH. Director De Bont does a spectacular job of keeping the action hurtling along, but his real accomplishment is coathing the performances he gets from Reeves and Dennis Hopper, as Howard Payne, a hyper nutcase with a penchant for twisted evil. Needless to say the cinematography and editing are first rate, as we gain the sensation of being on that bus. De Bont never lets up the accelerator until the end. It's the best ride I've had at the movies all year. City Slickers 11: The legend of Curly's Gold Directed by Peter Weiland Kk The first City Slickers was one of 1991's best films, a superb blend of comedy arfd poignancy about three men facing crisis' in their lives. They head west to find their smiles on a cattle drive, and in doing so, find themselves. It was a charming movie that I loved. The sequel, aside from a rip- roaring performance from Jack Palance. is a mess. Gone is the charm, the humour, and the sadness that made the first film so fine, and in its place is a Billy Crystal Love-fest. The problem is, as producer and co-writer, the love fest is with himself. He fancies himself a hero, which hurts, because in the first film he was not heroic on purpose, which he is here. Palance, who plays Curly's twin brother Duke gives the film an electric charge when he appears. Of course in doing 80 he finds the goodness within, probably the movie's best scene. Crystal has called this his homage to the classic treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948), yet each time he does Walter Huston's Signature jig, his homage becomes a desecration. Jack Palance fans enjoy, he's a delight, but the rest of this-film should be buried with the gold.
