- gag Citizen - Tuesday, June 21, 1994 J Sports Editor jumps into Scugog election Oshawa Times sports editor Wally Donaldson has announced that he will be a candidate for Scugog Township Ward 5 in the municipal elections thks Difvember. + Mr. Donaldson has been a resident of Scugog at Hopey's Beach since 1990 and told the Citizen he made his mind up earlier this year to take a run for the seat in this newly created ward in Scugog. It will be the first ever attempt at elected office for Mr. gin the Donaldson, a life-long resident of Durham who has worked at the Oshawa Times for 20 years. He told the Citizen that if elected, he will continue to work as sports editor for the daily paper and his work schedule (late evenings) will not conflict with his duties as a municipal councillor. "Besides," he said with a smile. "I'm the editor, I epn assign people to do evening'stories." He added that he has discussed his candidacy for council with his superiors at the Times and they have given him the green light. Mr. Donaldson said there are several reasons why he is seeking office. He wants to see limited growth and development Township without sacrificing the quality of life. "I favour controlled growth in the residential, commercial and industrial sectors," he said. "I also uphold quality at the same time. After all, quality is one attribute we as a community have earned and under no Durham Police make changes in 26 Division Durham Region Police have re- organized senior personnel in 26 Division. Effective June 20, there will be one sargent and one detective working out of the Durham stations in Port Perry, Sunderland and Uxbridge. Inspector Nancy Desjardine said the changes will make policing more efficient in the sprawling 26 Division which includes all of Scugog, Brock and Uxbridge Townships. Prior to the change, there had been one sargent in charge of each of the four platoons with two detectives working out of the offices in Port Perry and Uxbridge/Sunderland. Under the re-organization, Sgt. Geotge Scott and Detective Paul Mooy will work out of the Port Perry station on Old Simcoe Road; Sgt. Brian Curtis and Det. Dean Campbell will work out of the Sunderland station; and Sgt. Doug Park and Det. Les Neville will work out of the Uxbridge station. They will report to Inspector Desjardine who will work out of 26 Division HQ in Sunderland. circumstance should this be sacrificed." On more specific issues he said he wants to see the Township push ahead with plans to construct a community hall at the Scugog Arena, and he supports construction of a second ice pad with the assistance of upper level government grants and support from the corporate sector, service groups and organization and private citizens. Mr. Donaldson said that if elected, he would like to work on the parks and recreation committee and pledged to be. a strong team player on council. "In my. business as sports editor with the Times, I have learned a great deal about teamwork. The concept of a strong working relationship with his players has carried one of our most recognized sports figures, George Burnett, to great heights (as a coach) in professional hockey." Since moving to the Township in 1990, Mr. Donaldson has become involved in community sports events. He has covered the Junior C MoJacks and been a guest at their banquet, and for the last three years has MC'd the year-end banquet and awards presentations for Port Perry Minor Hockey. A graduate of Ryerson in " November election, he said his reason for seeking office is basically the same as his decision to make Scugog home. "I used to drive out to Port Perry as often as possible and really came to enjoy the community.
