A There will be some very exciting fastball action in Port Perry this summer as Minor Softball will host a double header between the Toronto Gators and Sloux City Soos on July 14. And on July 24 the National Womens teams of Australia, New Zealand and Canada will be in Port Perry hosted by the Scugog Angels. The announcements were made at a news conference last week. This is the second year Minor Softball has hosted international exhibition games in Port Perry. Last year the Soos played the Oshawa Hornets and more than 1400 spectators of all ages enjoyed the action at the north diamond. And local softball officials are just as excited about the double header this year between the Gators and the Soos. Terry Baytor, director of operations for the Toronto Gators said at a news conference last week that Darren Zack, ranked the top pitcher in the world, will be on the mound likely facing the Soos Mike Peichnik, a hard throwing lefty from Victoria BC coming off a fantastic 1993 season. Of course, local fastball fans will recall Darren Zack when he pitched for Garden River in the 1986 Intermediate Cc championship in Port Perry. The Greenbank Gamblers won it that year, but Zack's pitching was the talk of the tournament. He'll have his work cut out for him July 14 against a powerful Soo lineup that includes slugging catcher Tim Wahl and Bill Boyer, who can do it all with the bat. Along with Zack, the Gators have Oshawa native Brad Baker on the roster and he will likely pitch the second half of the twin bill. The Angels put 24 runs on the board while Cheryl Vaughan threw a six-hitter and fanned ten while holding the opposition to just two runs. Tracy Smith, Gena Spence and Cathy Davis each knocked out for hits for the Angels, while three hit outings came from Sherri Brown, Lisa er, Kim Stewart and Cheryl Vaughan. Spence, McConnell and Brown had four RBIs. Over the weekend, the Angels were in Ancaster for a tournament and got things off to a solid start with a 6-0 win over Ancaster. They scored two in the first and four in the 7th,led by Cathy Davis with three hits and Joanne McDuff with a pair of doubles and a single that created three RBIs. Davis got the win with a six hitter and five strike-outs. The Angels continued to play well in game two, downing Waterford 10-2, thanks to a five run outburst in the first inning. McDuff and Spence had two hits and three RBIs. Cheryl Vaughan got the win on ten hits. Angels met Kingston in game three and came with a hard fought 2-0 victory. Davis went the distance on the mound, giving up two hits and putting ten Ks into the book. This was a typical Angel-Kingston struggle. The Angels went down to defeat against Haldimand in a real see-saw battle in which the lead changed hands a couple of times. Angels led 1-0, then trailed 2-1, then went ahead 3-2 in the fifth inning and 4-2 in the 6th. Haldimand added 'one in the 6th, then put two big runs across in the 7th to nail down the 5-4 victory. McDuff, Spence, Davis and Crocker did the hitting and drive home the runs for the Angels. Vaughan started on the mound and turned the ball over to Davis in the 6th who was tagged with the loss. Fastball fans should note that on July 24, there will be three national teams playing exhibition games in Port Perry. New Zealand, Australia and Canada will be tuning up for the world championships in Newfoundland with these exhibition games. The Angels will play New Zealand on that afternoon.
