Last wend, the Port Merchants were in New Hamburg for a two day tournament. Although they did not make the finals, the team was happy with the continuing improvement in their play. In Game One, the Merchants beat Waterloo 8-1 and the game was mercied after five innings. Game Two saw Port meet their arch rivals, the Oshawa Juveniles, and lost 4-1 in a five inning game called due to time. In Game Three, the Merchants beat New Dundee 7-0 and the game was once again mercied after five innings. In Game Four, the Port Juveniles were eliminated from the tournament by Wingham in a disappointing 5-0 loss. This was a 0-0 ballgame until the fifth inning when Wingham scored all their unearned runs. Oshawa Juveniles went on to win the tournament beating Wingham 10-1 in the finals. This was a Junior Men's tournament except for Wingham, Oshawa and Port Perry who along with Scarborough and New Liskeard will be part of the Juvenile teams playing in the All Ontario in Oshawa on Saturday August 13. This will be a one day tournament only. On June 9, the Greenbank Gamblers won a well-played game against the Merchants. The Juveniles appreciated the positive comments which appeared in the Gamblers article last week. Highlights of this game were the home runs by Scott McLennan and Darrell Vander Slagt, and the super pitching by Jeff Card. On June 14, Mickey Finns visited Port Perry and made up for their recent loss to the Merchants by winning 7-1. The only real positive of the game was a long home run hit by Jeff Card in the sixth to break the shutout. On Thursday, June 16, the Merchants visited the Oshawa Squirrels at the Durham Fields and played a close ball game. Going into the seventh inning, the Merchants were losing 5-0 when their bats suddenly came alive. Card, on with a single and Kay with a walk were scored on a two run RBI single by Empringham. Venning on with a single was scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Shrigley which narrowed the gap to 5-3. Laird's hot bat came to the plate with two out, with Empringham at third and Shrigley at second, and any hit would tie the game. Laird had already hit two singles and a double in the game, and once again hit a hard shot to second. The Oshawa second baseman made an excellent fielding play to end the game for a 5-3 loss. Hitters for the week: Card - six singles, home run, two RBI; Cochrane - seven singles, double, five RBI; Empringham - two singles, two RBI; Kay - two walks. Laird - walk, four singles, double, RBI; Linton - two walks; McLennan - walk, three singles, home run, 2 RBI; McBride - two walks, seven singles, two doubles, two triples, four RBI; Moase - two walks, three singles, double, three RBI; Shrigley - two walks, RBI; Smart - three walks, five singles, RBI; Timms - walk, single, RBI; VanderSlagt - walk, single, double, home run, two" RBI; Venning - two singles. There will be some excellent fastball played on this weekend, and all ball fans should mark their calendar for a tournament not to be missed. @® Chevy Trucks \
