Port Perry High School drama students who will be performing at an International drama _ festival In Russia this coming October from left Chris Faulkner, Kyle Brough, B _ Trevor Hayman, Tracy Doyle, Amanda Powell, Doug Taylor and Drama teacher L| Goreskl, PPHS students will travel to Russia for Drama Festival in Oct. A group of students from Port Perry High School will be off to Glazov, Russia early in October to perform in an International Theatre Festival. Details are still sketchy at this time, but PPHS drama and English teacher Lisa Taylor said Friday the group of about ten students is confirmed to participate in this festival which for the past decade has brought together high school students from all over the world. "It is a great chance for our students to share theatré ideas with others from all over the world. This is a great opportunity for PPHS students," said Ms, Taylor. | Student Tracy Doyle who will certainly be ily the trip, said she is very ited about the chance to take part in an international festival. She also hopes they have a chance to do a little sight-seeing while in the former Soviet Union from October 1-7. Just where is Glasov? The students had to gefer to an atlas in the scho@Mprary to find this city, a six hour drive due east of Moscow, close to Gorki, a city that used to be closed to westerners under the former Soviet regime. Ms. Taylor said that at this time she is not certain where the plays will be performed PORT PERRY TIRE & WHEEL Automotive ® Farm Commercial @ All Brands Check our Prices Before You Buy! At FUELER'S PETRO CANADA 15829 Simcoe St., Port 985-8177 in Glazov, but the PPHS group will be putting one performance of either New Canadian Kid or Mirror Game, both by Canadian Dennis Foon. New Canadian Kid would be ideal for an international festival for several reasons said Ms. Taylor: a lot of the dialogue is in "jibberish," the one act drama is easily portable due to the lack of elaborate sets, and there are references to hockey. The students will have to come up with their travel costs from Canada to Moscow. After that, all their expenses, (travel, lodging and meals) will be covered by their Russian hosts, PPHS is the only Canadian entry ever in this festival. Ms. Taylor said she learned of the opportunity while attending recent workshops of Theatre Canada. To help cover their travel costs, the PPHS students are 'already planning fund raising events between now and October. They will be holding acting workshops for childrenyover the summer and in September hope to stage their Glasov Festival play in the public schools and at Town Hall 1873. Taylor.
