Eagles came home with the hardware after downing the Oshawa Mickey Finns Sunday afternoon 5-2 for their 4th win in this tournament without a defeat. Laurie Williams went the distance on the mound for Antrim Eagles setting down nine Finns by the strikeout. Finns Antrim iio, win first tournament Rich Bricknell touched Williams for a homer in the 7th and that was the only trouble the right- hander had all game. Eagles opened the tournament against Kitchener and Tim Thompson and Williams combined for the victory as each fanned six batters in a 5.1 victory. Larry Pilkey did most of the damage at the plate belting two homq runs. Peterborough Mr. Lube was the next victim and this time John Annis fanned six to get the 2-0 win. Eagle runs were scored by Dave Dickson and Williams. + Eagles defeated the host Curve Lake squad 3-0 to advance to the final game. John Annis fanned ' seven for the victory as Mike Moffatt and Steve Connors used the long ball to account for the Eagle runs. Team members were more than pleased with the performance on the diamond over the weekend. Laurie Williams was named tournament most valuable pitcher for his strong work on the mound. » Tennis Club celebrates with Doubles tourney by Heather McCrae Members of the Port Perry Tennis Club had plenty of reasons to be celebrating at the courts over the weekend. The club was hosting the popular Mixed Doubles Tournament for the twenty-fifth consecutive year and the newly resurfaced courts were declared 'open for play' at a special ribbon cutting ceremony Saturday morning. Ward 2 Councillor Marilyn Pearce had the honour of cutting the ribbon hut, prior to the ceremony, thanked the members of the PPTC for being such a keen, enthusiastic group towards fundraising. "Due to your commitment and dedication, the club and community now havej,three excellent tennis courts" she said. The cost to have the three courts resurfaced amounted to over $32,000. with the tennis club paying for two-thirds of the cost and Council paying the remainder. Many members have helped considerably towards having the courts resurfaced but one member who has voluntarily heted as a strong liason between Council and the PPTC executive is Bob Alexander. At the ribbon cutting ceremony Club President Sally Martin made Councillor Pearce an Honourary Member of the club, issuing her a shoe tag and the club's newsletter. Councillor Pearce said she hopes to see three new covered courts being built at the future sports complex. John Scott, one of the original members. of the tennis club, organized the popular tournament. Eighteen teens signed up for the annual eyent. Despite the inclement deather early Saturday which caused delays, everything went well on the Sunday, according to schedule. In the Championship finals the team of Ilse Stiller and Adam Johnston defeated Laurie Cooper and Werner Mees in two straight sets. In the consolation round, Fred and Pat Jewell were defeated in two sets over Roland and Karin Preiss. The Junior Summer Camp is again being organized by Jeff Murray from July 11-29 on weekday mornings. There are still a few openings available. member or $85. for non- members. Midget Angels move into tie for 4th in league play The Port Perry Midffet Angels picked up just one point in standings this past week, but the team is in a tie for fourth spot in the standings. ¢ The Port Perry Midget Angels came back after being ahead to tie the game in Oshawa this past Thursday night at 5-5. The girls went up two nothing The Port Perry Tennis Club held its annual Mixed Doubles Tournament over the weekend, with 18 teams participating. Winning the consolation round was the team of Karin and Roland Preiss (left). Winners of the Mixed Doubles Championship were lise Stiller and Adam * Johnston. in the third on an error by the shortstop on Nikki Christie's smash, then went to second after Tracy Weightman walked before Laurie Dudgeon cracked a single to right field that allowed runners ahead to score. The Angels added one in the sixth as Jennifer Eagan opened with a triple to-left centre, then scored on a Julie Ball triple. Whitby came back and countered one of their own. The score at ° this point was 5-3 for Whitby. Singles by Sara Cain and Tracy Weightman, two young ladies who are just turning 16, along with a walk to Laurie Dudgeon loaded the bases to put the Midget Angels in position to do a lot of damage. And that they did. Robin Adamson on a fielder's choice allowed one run to score then Brooke Wilkenson to left field allowed the runner on second to score before the inning ended. The final score was 5-5. Tracy Weightman led the team with 3 for 3 atrthe plate along with Nikki Christie and Laurie Dudgeon with two hits each. Robin Adamson had two RBI for the night. The Cobourg Angels came, to town and left with a win over the Midget Angels. Cobourg Angels built up a commanding 11-0 lead before the Midget Angels came to life in the sixth inning when they came up with eight runs to give Cobourg a scare. Cobourg scored two runs in the first then added onk in the second, three in the third, two in the fourth and two in the fifth before being held scoreless in the sixth, and giving up eight runs to the Midget Angels. Cobourg added four more in the seventh to cement the win. Tracy Weightman, with two hits lead hitting for the Midget's. Laurie Dudgeon cleared the bases in the eighth with a double. Three singles were awarded to Tracy Weightman, Stacie Jenkins and Jennifer Eagan and walks to Kim Poppleton and Robin Adamson. A hit batter set the stage for Laurie Dudgeon to double for the eight run uprising in the sixth. The final score was 14-8 for Cobourg.
