Fire department gets new van Getting to the scene of an emergency will be a lot safer for* Scugog firefighters who work out of Caesarea Hall. The department took delivery last week of a brand, shining new Emergency Rescue Vehicle. The International Crew Cab will carry four firefighters and a driver and all their gear and equipment quickly and safely to the scene of any emergency, said Scugog Fire Chief Don Steele last week. One significant advantage is that the seats allow the firefighters to wear their full breathing apparatus on the way to an accident, thus saving precious seconds if they have to get into a smoke-filled house. The various-sized storage compartments in the back of the Police Durham Police are investi- gating a break-in at a residence on Concession 8 last week. Police say thieves pried open a porch window of the home while the owners were away for the afternoon and they got away with over $4,000 in cameras, a TV set and VCR. They also did about $300 damage truck will carry all the other gear and equipment. The new truck, which has been on order for about a year, - replaces an old van that had been used for emergency rescue. Firefighters and their equipment had to travel in the same area. "It was not safe for the firefighters," said Chief Steele. "It was a box waiting for an accident to happen." However, the old van will be kept by the department for back- up and other uses as needed. The $140,000 Rescue Van with its 200 HP Diesel engine is the second major truck purchase for the department this year. Earlier this spring, the departmeht added a $230,000 pumper to the Port Perry Hall. report A break-in last week at Joe's Pizza on Highway 7A netted thieves an un-disclosed sum of cash. Police said entry into the unit was gained by forcing a back door. The break-in was discovered when the owner arrived for work about 10 o'clock last Friday morning.
