EN Reach for the Beach is the theme of the Scugog Chamber of Commerce Festival Days which starts this Thursday evening (July 7) and continues through Saturday, July 9 in Port Perry. There will be something for just about everyone at Festival Days this year from spectacular watercraft demos to a great kids show to three on three vers a rock and roll beach party dance and a 50's/60's ce. Festival Days chairman Bill Dowson said there is more emphasis this year on family fun. Since 1991, the Durham Board has been working with police and the Canadian Association for Safe Schools on ways to reduce the number of incidents of violence. One initiative has been to supply two way radios to administrative and custodial staff in 51 Durham schools. This move has proved invaluable in several of the incidents reported. The statement from the Board says more work still needs to be done, especially with high needs and at-risk children. The Board will be looking for partnerships in the community to provide input and development of a "violence prevention policy." Mother charged Durham Police have charged a 27 year old Pickering woman in connection with a motor vehicle accident that claimed the life of her nine year old son. © Police said the accident took place June 17 on Side Line 28, north of Concession Six in Pickering. A late model Nissan left the road about 11:15 PM and rolled over. Nine year old Jonathan Tobin lost his life in the accident and his three year old brother suffered minor injuries. On June 30, Durham Police charged Maureen Tobin with criminal negligence causing death, impaired driving and exceeding .08. Re-Opening . And at noon Saturday, it's registration for the Doubles Darts tournament in Festival Tent. If you like to dance, you'll be exhausted by the end of the weekend as there are dances in the Festival Tent Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights starting Thursday with well known local DJ Peter Kneale. Get out your beach wear Friday night for the Rock and Roll Beach Party with the Wolf Karaoke Band, and on Saturday kick back to the 50's and 60's in the Festival Tent with the music of Pink Cadillac. Port Perry's Queen Street and part of Water Street will be closed to traffic for the entire Festival so you can stroll at your leisure, do some shopping and take in the sights and sounds. Mr. Dowson said organizers are hoping that lots of visitors from outside the Township of Scugog will make a point of visiting during Festival Days. "We want to bring some tourists into town--let them see what we have to offer, do some_ shopping and hope they decide to come back for another visit," he said. Festival Days is a huge annual project for the Scugog Chamber of Commerce, and with a budget of $50,000, there is an element of risk.
