Car show will let you take a trip down memory lane by Heather MeCrae If, you want to trip down memory lane this Sunday and indulge in a little nostalgia, take a jaunt over to the Scugog Shores Museum and visit the Cruisin' Classics Car Club annual car show. Two members of the club who have had an avid interest in old cars since their childhood days are Paul Phillips and Ed Smale. It was four years ago when Paul visited the car show at the Port Perry Fair, app: ing the now into restoring a '58 Chev 2- door Impala Sports Coupe for his wife. Ed tries to get out for a good spin at least once a week and gets a fantastic response every time. Folks usually give him the 'thumbs up' sign and often will comment "I used to have one like that when I was a kid" or "I had one like that too but mine was a two-door". . And then there are the retire: GM employees who'll say "I ber building those on the beauty of some of the antique cars on display. Soon after he considered the possibility of starting up an 'old car' club. That fall the Cruisin' Classics Car Club originated with 25 members and it now has a membership of 60 families. With an annual membership fee of $25., meetings are held in the Phillips' garage at Durham Mobile Agri-Service on Scugog Island. line". The comments are endless and both men told the Citizen they have met interesting people from all over the country. The old cars are insured for a year but many are licenced for six months only, usually from May until the end of October. All profits made at the car show this Sunday go to the Scugog Shores Museum and it's one of the biggest single day events for the archives. The Paul was introduced to antiq cars at the tender age of four years. His father was always tinkering with old cars and when Paul was at pre-school age he was driving a 1928 Chev, sitting on a booster seat with his dad beside him. Paul still owns that ol' girl, and she's still driveable but hasn't been on the road for quite some time. Over the years Paul has owned several qld cars, currently owning a '67 Chev Bel Air. His fifteen year old daughter will be learning how to drive soon and her father feels it's a good car to learn on, being a standard "four on the floor", Another avid and original member of the car club is Ed Smale. Like his friend, he's been interested in old cars since his youth."You're just born into it" he told the Citizen recently, "some people like to cook, I like to restore and drive old cars!" Ed told the Citizen the first car he ever worked on was a '32 Studebaker Rockney. He currently owns a '38 Chev, a '56 Chev and a '64 Chevelle and more, "too many" he grins. He's location is perfect for the show, with the green grounds maintained by Paul throughout the summer, plenty of shade and music galore. At the show there are trophies and plaques given _out for 245 different categories. "We have a 'Best Car Club Display' for rival car clubs" says Ed, adding "our cars are not judged because we're the host club". No one went home-empty-handed last year as there were over 100 door prizes and a 50/50 draw. Weather permitting, SNAP-ON TOOLS will be having a huge display at the show this Saturday. Last year the tool company donated a 14-karat gold screwdriver in celebration of its 60th anniversary and it was won by the owner of a 1940 Ford Convertible, also being the sixtieth registered car to enter the grounds. "He was on cloud nine" chuckled Ed. General admission is $3.50 per person with special rates for seniors and children. Admission for antique cars, which includes two people, is $8.00. Show runs from 9 to 3:30 p.m. eo Wizards FROG POND CERAMICS 80 VanEdward Drive, Unit 3, Port Perry + REGISTER NOW = For Fall Classes LARGE SELECTION : COMING SOON : e Dragons e and others.
