wp" 12 -- Scugog Citizen ~ Tuesday, August 30, 1994 FIFTY DUA rss Roy still flying high after nearly 50 years by Heather McCrae After flying for almost fifty years a Port Perry man still gets the same thrill he first experienced above the clouds five decades ago Roy Robertson has flown so much over the years it's become a part of him. Now, in his mid- eighties, he still flies at every chance he gets. Growing up on the family farm in Scugog Township Roy often had dreams of flying someday, "taking to the sky". In January 1929, when he was 21 years old he had his first flight at Daytona Beach while vacationing with friends Ten years later when World War II broke out the air force was recruiting men for action and displayed a Tiger Moth aircraft in front of Toronto's City Hall. But the cut-off age was 31 and being 32 years old Roy was told "to go home and continue farming" as farmers were in great demand in war time too Years later he still had that yen to fly "but couldn't get anyone as crazy as me (to fly) too" Then, in 1945, the Ontario County Flying Club surfaced at the Oshawa Airport. Curious, Roy and two buddies, Fred Christie and Murray Holtby, visited the club. Roy was the only one of the three to join and I ---- Vision & Aging "A Doctor of Optometry 4 4 (Optometrist) is an independent primary health care provider who specializes in the examination, diagnosis, treatment, management and prevention of diseases and disorders of the visual system, the eye and associated structures as well as the diagnosis of related systematic conditions." Soon after he bought a Stinson 1083, a four seater airplane on floats, with Ted Griffen. The two pilots became great friends, sharing many wonderful times in the sky "Probably | feel safer in the air than on the road" he told the Citizen. Today, Roy owns a third-share of a Cessna 172 with Bill VanCamp of Port Perry and Bill Moore or Dagmar. Since acquiring his licence in the mid forties he's flown all Ontario and beyond in the neighbouring provinces, often flying to remote areas either for business or pleasure. The Tiger Moth he began his flying lessons in ceased being built after the war and Roy thinks there may only be a half dozen left in Canada now. One Tiger Moth is currently being restored by Oshawa developer Hannu Halminen and hopefully will be on display next Spring at the Oshawa Airport over For years, on Sunday mornings, Hoy and a group of pilot friends have congregated at Arnold Kerry's hangar in Utica, often flying out for breakfast to the Lindsay, Peterborough, Barrie or Elmhurst airports He's taken "hundreds of people up for rides over the years" and two weeks ago | became one of those folks Because Roy's "plane was already out with one of his partners | flew in the Kerry's Cessna 210 with Arnold at the controls, me strapped in the co- pilot's seat and Roy right behind me, pointing out the various controls and gorgeous countryside below us as we flew to Lindsay, all in a matter of fifteen minutes Accompanying us at the table in the airport diner was a trip made up of Grant Pascoe of cEnaney from nd and Tom Bray from the Ridges who had also flown in from Utica. Over cups of steaming coffee, plates of bacon and eggs | was entertained with several 'flying' stories and soon felt I could do this every Sunday morning! "Unlike the driver's test we have to pass on our 80th birthday and annually thereafter, once you've earned your pilot's licence it's yours for life providing you don't abuse your flying privileges and have an annual clean bill of health", said Roy Roy's been healthy all his life Although retired for several years and living with his wife, Ethel, in town he's not one to stay idle. He's up every morning Turn to page 13 GUARDIAN DRUGS ¥ Port Perry Pharmacy Lid. 209 Queen St. 985-2231 Roy Robertson, still flying at age 85.
