Stan Grills, a man with a green thumb by Heather McCrae It was ten years ago when Stan Grills won the Bicentennial Ontario in Bloom Flower Competition, sponsored by the Pine Ridge Garden Club. And the gardens surrounding his Prince Albert home now look every bit as good as they did then, or even better. One just can't help but marvel at the colourful display of copious annuals and privacy hedge surrounding his well manicured lawns. Practically, every imaginable flower you can think of adorns his home. Stan's proud of all his horticultural efforts. but probably the flowers he's most proud of are his three foot high begonias and the tallest dahlias he's ever grown yet. *% "I've had numerous people stop and look at the flowers over the years" he said "and they've never seen begonias this high, ever". When he retired a few years ago he felt he definitely needed a hobby and, not one to stay idle, he took up gardening. "I'd be bored silly if I didn't have this little hobby" he told the Citizen. Stan says he grows 95% of his flowers himself, either from seeds or sprouting from a bulb. Every fall he digs up the begonia bulbs, storing them in his' dark coldroom and in mid- February brings them out, planting them in pots of soil. By the time they're ready to be transplanted these beauties are already almost a foot high. He likes working mostly with annuals "as in the fall you can clean up and work the land". When asked what his secret is he just laughed. "Darned if | know. I just do everything the way I've done it for years, fertilizing when I plant in the spring and using a soaker hose", adding "I must have a green thumb 'cause everything I've planted just seems to grow"! In the summer, Stan is known for his colourful flowers and at Christmas people of all ages take great delight in driving by his magical display of lights and decorations. * Citizen Want Ads THEY WORK! 36 Water St., Port Perry
