Dietlein wants hall tender delayed Ward 4 councillor David Dietlein says Scugog Township should hold back from letting a tender for the 450-seat banquet hall until after the November municipal elections. He made the comment last Friday as he announced that he will seek a second term as the Ward 4 rep. Dietlein said he is hearing a lot of opposition from constituents in his ward against the $1.1 million hall at the Scugog Arena. The hall has been given the green light by the present council and about $600,000 of the cost is coming from federal/provincial infrastructure funds. "I believe we must pay more attention to our needs, rather than our wants. The repair of basic infrastructure such as crumbling roads and bridges is of more importance than the new banquet hall in Port Perry," he stated. Dietlein said he fears there may be another round of cut- backs from the province to municipalities, which could force Scugog to dip further into reserve accounts. He said that over the last three years as a councillor he has worked to help keep the Caesarea Hall open, has supported the plan for impr ts to the Blackstock Fairgrounds, and up-grading of services in Caesarea. As for the proposed sale by the Township of open space in Blackstock for three building. lots, he said this is hecessary to generate the funds for the improvements to the Fairgrounds there. He wants to see the Port Perry Fairgrounds preserved and would be willing to have the Township sign a long term (15 year) lease with the Fair Board without the one-year escape clause. the Trent-Severn Waterway. A supporter of open government, he said he has voted against any by-law over the last three years which creates un-necessary red tape. With degrees in biology from Trent University and the University of Guelph, he has taken a strong interest in local environmental issues, and was active in Zero Garbage when there was the threat of land-fill site in Ward 4. Known locally as the Conway property, the parcel is 8.5 acres on the north side of Highway 7A, just east of the Water Street intersection in Port Perry. The parcel fronts on Highway 7A and stretches north to the shoreline of Lake Scugog. It takes in the land where the former Conway Restaurant, Bayshore Takeout and Laundromat and Car Wash are located. Over the past few years, there have been several proposals for large scale commercial and residential development for the lands, and all Official Plan modifications and local zoning are in place: Port Perry lawyer Michael Fowler, who represents the owners of the property, said last week the sale of the land was ordered by the courts with the listing to last six months. "If there is no sale within six months, we will be back in court seeking further instructions," he said. And if there Ps a sale, it must be approved by the courts. * Mr. Fowler said that because of the location of the parcel, he is confident there will be a sale in the near future. Even before the parcel went on the market a little over a week ago, Mr. Fowler said there had been a "great deal of interest from several parties." He noted that in the most recent round of development talks for the land, there had been interest expressed by such blue chip corporate clients as A&P, McDonald's. Tim Hbrton Donuts, a large drug chain and a major bank. The most recent development proposal, which was approved by Scugog Township council called for a commercial mall of about 95,000 square feet and 120 condominium units along the shore of Lake Scugog. That proposal was based on the acquisition of four smaller parcels under different ownership. The listing for the 8.6 acres is held by CB Commercial Real Estate Group Canada Inc. in Toronto, one of the largest firms of its kind in the country. The agents are Barrie Barootes and Don Goundry.
