wp" 26 -- Scugog Citizen ~ Tuesday, Aug £30, 1994 Landers stops Gamblers cold in playoff action Last Thursday night in Greenbank Park the Oshawa Flying Squirrels came in to play the Gamblers in an Oshawa City and District playoff game and they stopped the Greenbank squad cold behind the pitchinggef vetersn Pete Landers. The Gamblers claimed only four hits off the Oshawa southpaw who accumulated eleven strikeouts during the game. Oshawa got off to a fast start as they scored three runs in the first inning on four hits and a base on balls. Tim Evans on the Greenbank hill settled down and held Oshawa off the scoreboard until the fifth inning when the Squirrels grouped another four hits into three more runs and a comfortable lead. Dave Hoffman, who had three hits on the night, ended the scoring with a solo home run in the seventh and Oshawa had claimed a 7-0 win. ) It was unfortunate for Greenbank that both Mark Goreski and Jim Chilvers were unavailable for 'this playoff contest, but Goreski was in Salt Lake City with the Oshawa Mickey Finns at the N.A.F.T.A. Tournament and unexpected work commitments made Chilvers unavailable. With. both Gambler pitchers off duty it made for a tough assignment to upset a quality team like the Squirrels. Give full marks to Tim Evans who made the switch from fielder to pitcher and battled Oshawa for the full seven innings. The only Greenbank batters to hit safely off Landers were Trevor Till, Don Beaton, Paul Goreski and Brian Till. The loss to the Squirrels means that every Gambler game now is sudden death and one more loss ends the Oshawa City league season for the team, who had only lost two games during the season. Their next game is this Thursday night in Greenbank at 8:15 against the Oshawa who have * + returned from Salt Lake City.
