wp 12 -- Scugog Citizen ~ Wednesday, September 7, 1994 = Terry Fox Run for Cancer set for Sept. 18 To the Editor: As we head into the final planning stages for the Port Perry Terry Fox Run | want to express our appreciation for the encouragement and support that the organizing committee continues to receive. The individuals on the organizing committee bring many important skills; Leo Plue and Laura Elliott how thankful I am for their participation, as runners they both bring the knowledge and experience necessary to have designed the three courses to meet a variety of interests. A ten km and 5 km for serious runners/walkers and a 1 km of particular interest to families with young children, seniors and relay teams. The organizing committee believed that it was important to bring the Terry Fox Run back to Port Perry for several reasons. First to provide an opportunity for our community to come together to respond to the needs of our neighbours, family, 50th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY Congratulations to MYRTLE & GORDON PRENTICE on celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary. He asked all Canadians to give colleague chose to give part of her weekly allowance. I have mentioned the need for community support which brings me to this years Terry Team members. So far we have six a dollar to provide the means to support research to find a cure. My goal is to approach individuals I know that will not be participating in the Run and asking them for their dollar to sponsor my participation. Just think of the money that could be raised here in Scugog! It's been a lot of fun especially when individuals attempt to donate more than $1.00, entire families become sponsors at $1.00 each. The daughter of a dividuals who will be actively involved on September 18th, each of these individuals symbolize what the run is all about: that cancer can be beaten. We will also be remembering individuals who won't be with us, those whose cancer could not be beaten. A memory board will be set up where individuals may choose to identify that they are participating in the run in memory of a person who has died of cancer Marylynn West-Moynes, Janice Beechey and Ken Crawford are busy organizing many aspects of the run. Once again these friends amaze me with their support, for each of us itis a way to fight back, to say no more that we don't want others like Terry Fox in 1981 at the age of 22 and my John in 1991 at the age of 19 to die of cancer We're all looking forward to September 18th. We hope to see you at Palmer Park, starting time 9:00 to 10:00 with the official welcome and warm up beginning at 9:00. Remember there is no alternate date, the event goes even if it rains Elizabeth McArthur Co-ordinator, Terry Fox Run Residents concerned over opening of sand pit To the Editor: Trucks rolling down the road spuing dust and diesel fumes 12 hours a day. Huge craters appearing behind your house as heavy machinery excavates gravel And the local government may not be able to do anything about it This Think again Scugog. Any land that is zoned "rural" by the township has a number of possible uses: cemetery, kennels, way-side pit. A way- side pit is a source of sand and gravel that can be excavated upon the granting of a permit by the Ministry of Natural Resources to the Ministry of Transport, for can't happen here! road construction. I have been told by a ministry spokesman that the MTO does not have to get the approval of local, elected officials. The permit lasts 18 months Stedmans Department + Store "Where itis a Pleasure to Serve You!" PORT PERRY PLAZA (Hwy. 7A) 985-3844 and can be renewed many times. It seems that the MTO is quietly locating and establishing these way-side pits throughout the Durham Region as sources of sand and gravel for the 407 highway and other projects One such application for a permit has been made by the owner of a property on McKee Rd. near Manvers-Scugog Townline Rd. in eastern Scugog Township. The proposed site backs on to 21 residential' properties, all occupied by families. The owner of the proposed pit does not live or work in the area, He does not depend on the water supply. His children do not play in the area. The residents of the surrounding properties have great concern over this proposed project. So far from city water, they- ali depend on wells. HaR BLOCK 985-9803 pit change the water table or contaminate the water? At least 5 children have been buried alive this summer in sand pits. Will any of these local children or their friends suffer a similar fate" The G.T.A. is desperate for waste disposal land. Will the exhausted pit become a landfill site? At the very least, will there be illegal dumping" This is mosquito country. Will this pit become a breeding ground? The pit may be abandoned when it is finished. Will it become a playground for dirt bikers and 4X4's? Dust and noise pollution, road safety and degradation - all are specters on the horizon. The land is in the testing stage now. Within 6 months, the trucks could be rolling. What seems like a local problem can and will affect all of Scugog. This is an election year for our municipality. The residents of eastern Scugog Township know what one of the issues will be. For all interested area residents, an information meeting will be held this Thursday evening, Sept.8, at 7pm at the Nestleton Community Centre. Everyone welcome. D. Parsons, R.R.#2, Blackstock.
