- Scugog Citizen -- Wednesday, Sepiember 7, 1994 -- 15 4 Teens excel in sports and with school work It's been a pretty good year for Todd Smart and Darrell Vander Slagt. In fact that might be something of an understatement for these recent Port Perry High School grads who are proof that sports and academics can be a combination for success Consider this. In the past 12 months, both won a pair of provincial softball (OASA) championships with the Port Perry Merchants at the Juvenile and Midget levels. In fact, in the past three years, they have won three titles in fastball And last spring, Darrell was a defenseman on the Key Bar Office Equipment Juvenile hockey team that romped its way to a provincial title as well. Todd Was a member of the Port Perry Junior C MoJacks. And both graduated from grade 13 this spring as Ontario scholars--over 80 per cent in six OAC subjects. Todd is now at University of Windsor to study geography and Darrell at McMaster to start a degree in kinesiology. In a recent interview with the Citizen both agreed that their Yours in Education by Bobbie Drew, Scugog Trustee The days are getting shorter and, lately, cooler and everyone's thoughts are turning to "back to school". In particular I'm sure there are many parents who have been thinking of September 6th on those few rainy days last week In the first few weeks of school the majority of calls I receive are related to transportation In June of 1991, a comprehensive audit of student transportation was completed which outlined for us several ways that the system could economize, For September of that same year many changes which saved the Board and the taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars were made In subsequent years other changes have taken place: having drop off and pick-up points where feasible rather than picking up at individual homes; transporting students only to their designated school; continued exploration of sharing routes with the Separate School Board; Although there are no major route and time changes for the Scugog area this year, there will be in the next two school years. All elementary and secondary schools are now hooked into the main computer at the Board Office and all students and their addresses are being entered to computerize routes. This is being done area by area, with Oshawa and Whitby the first to be done effective this September. Ajax and Pickering will be completed by next January and then the entire north area of Scugog, Uxbridge and Brock At the same time the Separate Board 1s computerizing it's system and then the two will be blended to complete the sharing of routes It is imperative that parents provide the school with their 911 address to allow the Boards to implement the computerized system of transportation. Mary of you may have seen the advertisement for, and the coverage of, the Kindergarten school bus orientation. An invitation was extended by the schools in June to the 1994 Kindergarten students and they enjoyed a learning experience that started with a Winnie the Pooh movie of how to get on the bus and what to expect. Then they had a ride on a bus. The many, many children who attended certainly enjoyed their day and I'm sure that they and their parents are feeling a lot better about the big day when they will take their first ride. Thanks to the bus companies for their co- operation and sponsorship. If you have problems specific to transportation you can call directly to the transportation department, ask for Darlene at 1-800-240-6943. In the first few weeks of September this line-and this department can be very busy, so please persevere and be patient. If you have any questions about education or your schools, I would be pleased to hear from you, please contact, me at 985-7183. PICTURE PERFECT TV involvement in sports at a highly competitive level helped with their school work "You have to learn to be disciplined and learn to work with others," said Todd Darrell said he found sports a good release from his academic work. "You just can't be hitting the books all the time." Juggling the demands of grade 13 and sports is possible and the key is being totally organized and making lists of things to do on a daily or weekly basis. And both worked very hard at their studies; several hours a #day, sometimes taking the books with them the way.lo a hockey game Darrell said he studied "smarter" this past year, i.e., with the TV off. * He was motivated as well by suggestions in recent years that perhaps OAC subjects were "not for him," that he might not become an Ontario scholar "I still have to send off that Ont. scholar photo to a few people," he said with a wry grin All joking aside, both told the Citizen they set out last fall with a goal of becoming an Ontario scholar. Having strong motivating factor Todd not only hit the books, the ice and the playing field, he worked part time at a gas bar and took an active role in student council activities. He has been chosen as a valedictorian for the fall commencement as well Are they so-called achievers?" No, not really. They this goal was a "over- set their goals, kept their priorities straight, organized their time and gave it their best shot in the study hall, on the ice and on the diamond Both are looking forward to university and said they will continue to combine studies with sports. . It's been a solid good mixture for these well spoken, likeable young men Todd Smart (left) and Darrell Vander Slagt are proof that sports and academics can go hand in hand. See story.
