aap. = 16 -- Scugog Citizen -- Wednesday, Septemb. pd 7, 1994 Local Percherons do well at CNE show Percherons began to show up "hight for Ontario owners. After coming home from the CNE with a brace of ribbons for his Percheron horses, Dean Swayze is hoping that the best is yet to come. Mr. Swayze of Glen-Dor Percherons, southeast of Blackstock, has been showing his Percherons at the CNE for the last five years and this year had the best results ever. His yearling mare Brandy took second place in the open class, then won first in the Yearling Futurity. Then his prize stallion Mike really caught the eye of the judges-as he took three first place rosettes in the Open and Futurity classes for two year olds and in cart class. Mike and Brandy also had third place finishes in other classes. But it was those first place finishes that were really satisfying for Dean. "I felt pretty good about that," he told the Citizen last week as he showed off his prize Percherons at his farm on the Cartwright East Quarter Line in the southeast corner of Scugog Township. He is also very pleased at the showing his horses attained early in August in Ohio against some of the top animals from all over the United States. Mike is really starting to get come attention and Dean plans to "showcase" him at five shows in the United States next year, including the prestigious World Congress in Kansas City, Mo. Dean has already had offers from buyers who want to use him as a "hitch horse," but with plans to breed him for the first time this winter and what looks like such a promising future as a show horse, Dean has no plans to sell Mike. At two years of age, Mike is a magnificent animal, jet black in colour with a large head, long neck and the big feet that judges look for in the draft horse competitions. ; Draft horses, like the Percheron, were kept for heavy work and if they didn't have the big feet under them, they were not very effective. He now stands 17 hands and weighs about 1500 pounds, but he's not finished growing by any means. Over the next three years, he'll grow even taller and add at least another 500 pounds. Dean said he 'is firmly committed to breeding, raising and showipg Percherons. "We arelfrying to promote the breed and get better and quality (horses). It's important to keep the heavy horse breeds going," he said. Dean bought his first Percheron for pleasure, partly because he recalls Percherons used for work on his father's farms many years ago. About ten years ago, he started to breed the horses and then started to enter them in the show rings. He now has four on the farm and admits that keeping the horses and getting them ready for weekend shows is almost a full time job. And it's expensive. A new horse trailer, for example cost over $30,000 The Percheron is one of the three main heavy or draft horse breeds. The Belgian and the Clydesdale are the other two Originally from France, the Percheron was used for heavy work on farms, in the forests and in the military VISIT US YEAR- ROUND Saturdays & Sundays 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM 1540 HWY. 7A WEST 985-8424 PORT PERRY ® FREE Parking B FREE Ad ission BM FREE Balloons Over 17,000 square feet of great bargains ... And already he's looking ahead to next season and the chance to put his best Percherons against the best from all over North American at the shows in the States. of Scugog sh Dean S ribbons at the CNE in August. See story above. I on Mike, his prize Percheron stallion, a winner of several PPHS students cancel Russian trip over safety A group of drama students from Port Perry High School won't be going to Russia this fall, after all. Fears for the personal safety of the students forced cancellation, said Lisa Taylor a teacher at PPHS, who organized the trip and was to accompany the students. The students were to participate in an international drama festival in October in Glasnov, a city several hundred kilometres east of Moscow Ms. Taylor said she began to think of cancelling the Russian trip earlier this summer when there were news report of tourists taken hostage and some of them were killed. Once incident took place in the general area of Glasnov. There has been a steady decline in law and order in Russia over the last couple of years. After conferring with the students parents, the decision was made to call it off. "Sure the students were really disappointed, but they understood the reasons why," said Ms. Taylor. While they won't get to see Russia this fall, they may get to Edinburgh in the spring. Ms| Taylor said she is working now| to get the PPHS drama group into #n international fringe theatre festival in the Scottish capital. Over the summer the students held several drama workshiip as a fund-raising, and Ms. Taylor said she is very grateful for the encouragement from the Scugog Chamber of Commerce. Some of the students in the drama group will be graduating next June, so getting the group into an international festival somewhere in this school year is a priority.
