Rottweilers may be getting an undeserved reputation from media reports this summer Several media reports this summer of attacks on humans by Rottweilers may be giving the breed a bad reputation that is not deserved, says a Scugog Island woman who has been breeding and raising Rottweilers for more than a decade. Irene and Mike Jackman own Von Damien Rottweilers and she firmly believes that keeping a dog as large and powerful as a Rottweiler is not for everyone. And just as there are owners who don't know what they are doing with these dogs, likewise there are breeders only interested in making money. "Rottweilers do have a certain amount of protectiveness, but as a breed they are not aggressive," she told the Citizen in an interview last week as "Oliver" sat.quietly by her side. "Oliver" is a four year old male, a Canadian champion 'who has won nine best in show ribbons this year (defeating more than 6500 other dogs in the process) He's owned by a Scarborough resident, but was bred and trained by the Jackmans and is handled in the show ring by Mike. Lift-Master The Professional Ling He's 26.5 inches high at the shoulder, weighs about 120 pounds, all of it pure muscle. Oliver is one powerful animal. But says Irene, he ig "just a dog. The only difference is his size and power." Because of this, Rottweilers need strict training as a pup. "If (an owner) can't control a dog when it's small, it's going to be very tough when he's full grown," she said. When a full grown dog won't do what he's told or stop when the owner tells him to stop, there is a potentially dangerous situation. "A big dog must be under control at all times, even when on the owner's property. Irene said she will turn down buyers if they appear nervous or if they are looking for a dog as a "hired gun." It is up to the breeder to make sure the owner and the pup are a good match. Some breeders, she said just don't care so long as they get their money. One of the reasons why the Rottweiler is in the news more often is their sheer numbers. The breed is now the 5th most popular in Canada and 2nd in the United States. With such a demand, there are more and more unscrupulous breeders. There could be a positive side to the bad press Rottweilers are getting. "Consumers e getting smarter. They realize that cheaper is not always better," said Irene. And this may help weed out the bad breeders. Rottweilers are impressive dogs and make fine family pets. It's easy to see why they are so popular. Irene has a few words of advice for anyone thinking of owning a Rottweiler. Check out the parents. Buy from a reputable breeder and get the dog enrolled in a bona fide obedience course. And remember, that tiny eight- week old puppy is going to grow into a large, powerful adult. § Local Real Estate Board celebrates Home Week September 25 to October 1 is Ontario Home Week and this year's theme is "Home Ownership...A Community Celebration" .
