¢ it wy» 2 Scugog Citizen -- Wednesday, September 7, 1994 ~ Council/Fair Board battle over new lease. From page one the'very fact a council committee and a committee from the Fair Board met several times this year is an indication that council wants the Board to have a new lease. . The current 20-year lease expires in July, 1997. Council and the Fair Board have met several times to try to. hammer out a new lease. The impasse, -according to Board chairman Paul Christie has been the so-called termination clause in the proposed new lease. It would give either the Township or the Fair Board the right to terminate the lease on one year's written notice. "Without the clause, we (Fair Board) would have the lease . was signed by now," said Dr. Paul Puckrin, a member of the Board and on the lease negotiating committee. Claiming the termination clause essentially amounts to a one year lease for the Board, he said this makes it impossible for the Fair Board to do long range planning for the grounds or to sink money into improvements or new facilities. "We are trying to show the public the fairgrounds belong to them. Use the grounds year round, not just during the three- day Fair," said Dr. Puckrin. Mr. Christie said public reaction to the sign at the Fair "very positive and very supportive." The sign with its bold letters in red and black was located in a very busy location at the Correction A front page article in the August 30 edition of the Scugog Citizen reported on the judicial sale of the Conway Property. The article said that Port Perry lawyer Michael Fowler represents the owner of the property. In fact, Mr. Fowler acts for the HEARING HOTLINE Cit, 8 PETERBOROUGH B 244 Charlotte Street, K9J 2V1 (705) 743-1861 AN INNOVATION IN APPEARANCE AND ACOUSTICS first mortgagees, who are selling the property pursuant to the Court Order. Fair Board members were doing a brisk business selling shirts with the logo "save our fairgrounds." When the sign went up, there were angry words between members ~ of council and members of the Board. Mr. Christie said the Board wants to make the lease a political issue for the up-coming municipal elections. "It was not our intent to cause anyone any embarassment, but.......... we are trying to look 15 years down the road." Ward 4 councillor David Dietlein favours a new ten-year lease without any escape clause. Ward 1 rep Ken Carruthers in declaring last Friday that he will run againggaid he too favours a ten year lease without an escape clause. Mayor Hall said the escape clause is a method of terminating the lease. "In any lease there has to be such a method of termination." He said the Township owns the Fairgrounds and must not give up the opportunity to use the lands for other uses, should such a situation arise. But he repeated several times that there is fio "hidden agenda" SIMPLY THE BIST QUALITY & SERVICE HEARING CENTRE B LINDSAY B 4 Lindsay Street North K9V 1T4 (705) 328-0145 MORE THAN JUST A SIMPLE DISAPPEARING ACT TERRY FAIERS ® Board Certified ® 25 Years Experience Instrument Specialist 8 PORT PERRY 462 Paxton Street LIL 1L9 (905) 985-3166 HEARING HOTLINE HEARING HOTLINE HEARING HOTLINE for development of the Fairgrounds. At one point he said the presence of the sign at the Fair was "bargaining in bad faith" by the Fair Board, but council is willing to sit down at the negotiating table again before the November election. When asked if the Fair Board will negotiate before the November election, Mr. Christie said "perhaps." Immigration on agenda at Reform Party meeting Canada's immigration policies will be the topic of discussion at a public meeting in Port Perry hosted by the Reform Party of Canada. The meeting will be held Monday, September 12 at the Latcham Centre getting underway at 7:30 PM. Evert Vroegh, president of the Reform Party Association of Durham riding said he and two other Reform Party-members will be at the meeting to answer questions and explain Reform's positions on immigration. Some <f the issues that will be addressed at next Monday's meeting include the refugee system, deportation of bogus refugees, the effect of high levels of immigration during high periods of unemployment and what Canadians can do to influence introduce a common sense approach to immigration policies. Mr. Vroegh said the Reform Party believes immigration policies should be essentially economic in natufe with immigrants possessing the skills for the job market. -- Pool, anybody? Mills speaks out From page one translated into specifics after studies and analysis which are still to be completed." Asked to comment on the Mills letter, Joel Aldred of the Save Scugog Island Committee says it proves just how correct the Committee has been in raising concerns about the environment and impact on Island residents. "Mr. Mills has reversed his field. He now understands that it is his responsibility to represent all of the people, not just the handful of residents on the Missassaugas Reserve," he stated. Mr. Aldred responded to the letter from Mr. Mills by firing off a letter of his own on the touchy issue of a proposed gaming facility on Mississaugas for Scugog First Nation land on the Island. His letter is also re-printed on the letters to the editor page in this edition of the Scugog Citizen.
