Fastball season ends for Port Perry Bantam Merchants After an upsetting OASA performance, the Port Perry Bantam Merchants were back at it on Wednesday, August 24, in league playoffs against East Gwillimbury. | Marshall McQuaid was on the mound, and got plenty of help from the offense as Port won 6-4. The entire team showed up to play this night and led by Brad Morton and Jason Logan, who each had big nights at the plate, started this year's playdowns on a positive note. The next night however, was a different story. Playing in Scarborough, the Merchants ran into some bad luck. Port's pitching fell victim to many cheap hits that fell into no man's land and got down early 10-2. Although Port mounted a charge in the later innings, led by a bases clearing triple courtesy of Ryan Williamson, it was all too little too late and the Merchants lost 11-10. This loss put Port in a must win situation from there on in. Playing against Markham on Tuesday, August 30, the boys took out some of their frustration. They made a mess of Markham pitching and won handily 20-3. Every player in the line up collected at least one hit, and when your roster includes 14 guys, well you get the picture. Brad Morton led the way with four hits followed by Mike Phoenix, Carl Phoenix, Jason Best and Doug Short who each had three hits. Perhaps Ryan Williamson showed just how poor the « opponent's pitching was. He tried to use a bat that weighed oh.....about as much as®Owen St. John, to keep from being out in front of the ball. Although he was foiled in his attempt by the Pott coaching staff, he proved a valid point that summed up this contest. Port then played on Friday, September 2, against East Gwillimbury and what they did right their previous meeting, they did wrong on this night and lost 4-2. The only offense was provided by Jeff Clarke who belted a 2 run dinger in the fifth inning but the Merchants let this one slip away. This loss ended Port's year, a year that was good but could have been better. The Merchant's final record was 20- 14, a .588 winning percentage. The team members would like to thank coaches Ron Short and Craig Venning for their hard _ work and dedication. Eagles got a strong effort on the mound by John Annis who fanned ten batters and held the BB fo just three scattered hits. Eagle infielder Larry Pilfey staked his team to a 1-0 first inning lead as he belted a solo homer. Eagles were able to push across two more runs in the bottom of the second and another in the third to open a comfortable 4-0 lead. The Gamblers also stayed alive in the playoff chase last week with a 5-0 victory. Both the Gamblers and Eagles have lost once in this round-robin, so the loser on Thursday night will be hanging up the spikes until next year. Game time at the Greenbank Park Thursday night is 8:15.
